Dark Tower Comics Back on Track

The Little Sisters run has been a high point in the Dark Tower comics. My enthusiasm for these visual companions to the novels had waned over the last couple of arcs as the series explored Roland's "lost years," the time between the end of his Wizard and Glass flashback and the first Dark Tower book, The Gunslinger. I was initially excited by the prospect of seeing events only partially described in the books, like the Battle of Jericho Hill. The problem has been that, as the comics drift farther away from original King material, writer Robin Furth's voice becomes more prominent than King's. Based on the short story from Everything's Eventual, Little Sisters brings back the charm and familiarity of the first couple Dark Tower arcs.

You'll find some of King's lines from the short story; you'll recognize, and sometimes be floored by, the representations of the Slow Mutants, the little doctors, and the Sisters and their pavilion. This run also presents some of the most shocking gore and violence of the entire series, as the Little Sisters story is one of the purest moments of horror in Dark Tower fiction. Although the series has not yet reached the first Dark Tower novel, Little Sisters brings it to the doorstep. We're now once again firmly entrenched in Stephen King material, and the Battle of Tull from The Gunslinger is up next. Marvel's illustrators have done an overall amazing job adapting the Dark Tower into graphic novel form, and from the looks of the Little Sisters of Eluria, they will not disappoint as they wade back into well-known, well-loved King territory.

Creepy

This graphic novel is probably the best adaptation of Stephen King's Roland story, and is definitely the most creepy and horrific. It follows king's short story very well, and the artistry is excellent! There's a lot of violence and gore, and the drawings live up to the horror of the original story. I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of this entire series, but this one tops all of the others. Hopefully, the writers and artists can keep up the good work they have been doing, and giving all of the Stephen King fans a visual treat, and a pictorial glance into the Dark Tower story.

Great artwork, does justice to the novel.

I'm a big Stephen King/Dark Tower fan. I've been collecting the Dark Tower Series comics since they launched, they do justice to the novels, quite possibly the best part of these books is the back section with the history of the worlds, they really open your eyes to whats going around. Even if you're a purist of the sort that doesn't want to read comics these are worth picking up just for the back section.

Great question. Tedious, tendentious, tiresome answer.

What is a dog? As the opening lines of the book tell us, it's a really good question, one which the authors infuriatingly refuse to even try to answer for vast sections of this book. The book (especially the opening) is dense and tedious, chockfull of tendentious rhetorical questions, pompous throat clearing, pointless academic hedging (meant to emphasize how very sophisticated they are, not like those rubes who simply say what they mean), and constant allusions to tangential issues that are never explored or returned to.

I believe that the authors really did intend to write a book about their (actually quite interesting) field research on wild dogs and what it reveals about the nature and history of the dog, but they lacked the discipline (or a sufficiently brutal editor) to cut the self-indulgent lard out of it. Prepare to slog through long, tiresome, mind-numbing sections about things that have only a tenuous connection to the subject matter. For instance, Chapter 2 is one unconscionably long discussion of how many dogs there are on earth, written in the most roundabout way possible, including pointless digressions about hypothetical implausibly precise estimates. The entire chapter appears to be nothing more than an excuse to get some more self-citations to the authors' population studies.

The whole chapter could be summed up as: "It's hard to know how many dogs there are, but it's probably about one billion. This means that dogs currently outnumber all jackals, wolves, coyotes, and dingoes combined by 20 to 1. In addition, the vast majority of dogs (probably 85 percent or more) are not domesticated or otherwise under human reproductive control."

But it's a good example of how poorly written the whole book is: the authors appear to be simply incapable of saying anything in a painless and straightforward fashion, and then, where it is necessary to advance the overall argument, explore and explain the complexities. If you're going to read it to pick the meat off its monster-y bones, I recommend aggressive skimming.

Fascinating and insightful

Loved this book. The authors present a a unique perspective on dog behavior, the evolution of dogs, and how dogs domesticated humans as opposed to us controlling the fate of dogs. Written in an easy going and concise manner, this book makes me look at my own dogs in particular and all canines in general in a totally different light. Highly recommend.

The authors’ observations of free-roaming village and third world city garbage dump foraging dogs

I am dismayed that this reputable publisher (which published my doctoral dissertation Integrative Development of Brain and Behavior in the Dog and other scholarly texts about dogs have put this one out. The title is a giveaway with the “What” rather than the “Who” about indigenous/natural/aboriginal/landrace dogs. The authors’ observations of free-roaming village and third world city garbage dump foraging dogs, and the plethora of tangential reference citations that provide no deeper understanding or appreciation of the nature of these dogs, objectifies them. I find this objectionable, having studied and lived with these landraces from Africa and India. This book is an affront to the species and a waste of trees.
There is nothing documenting the symbiotic benefits of aboriginal dogs to indigenous peoples, no details about the nature and spirit of these dogs or of their sensibilities, protectiveness and intelligence---traits that benefit the human community. Rather, their observations, cast in a Darwinian perspective, give a false impression of scientific authority, but to what end? They regard the hard life of village dogs as their “paradise” and state that injuries from fights over a bitch in heat rarely cause injury. Yet even a small bite can mean a slow death from flesh-eating maggot fly infestation. They assert that these dogs, unlike wild canids who range far to hunt and bring food in their stomachs which is regurgitated for their cubs, are lacking this aspect of maternal care. But they have little need to do so since the pups around weaning time are close to food sources, and indeed, on occasion do regurgitate.
They confuse symbiosis with commensalism (eating off the same table, page 133) which was a catch question for my students of animal behavior in my classes at Washington University, St. Louis. I trust that the students at Hampshire College, where co-author Raymond Coppinger is emeritus professor of biology, are now better informed and inspired by his successor.

About the Author
Charles Pfleeger is an internationally known expert on computer and communications security. He was originally a professor at the University of Tennessee, leaving there to join computer security research and consulting companies Trusted Information Systems and Arca Systems (later Exodus Communications and Cable and Wireless). With Trusted Information Systems he was Director of European Operations and Senior Consultant. With Cable and Wireless he was Director of Research and a member of the staff of the Chief Security Officer.� He was chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Security and Privacy.

Shari Lawrence Pfleeger is widely known as a software engineering and computer security researcher, most recently as a Senior Computer Scientist with the Rand Corporation and as Research Director of the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection. She is currently Editor in Chief of IEEE Security & Privacy magazine.

Jonathan Margulies is the CTO of Qmulos, a cybersecurity consulting firm. After receiving his Masters Degree in Computer Science from Cornell University, Mr. Margulies spent nine years at Sandia National Labs, researching and developing solutions to protect national security and critical infrastructure systems from advanced persistent threats. He then went on to NIST's National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, where he worked with a variety of critical infrastructure companies to create industry-standard security architectures. Excellent Overview of Security

I read and review about 30 books a year on average, plus spend most of my days researching and writing about digital security. I've been doing this routine since 1989 so I have a so-so understanding of cyber security. Security in Computing took me by surprise since it looked like the average security 101 book I read way too often. This book is nothing like any security book I've read before except a few dissertation pieces I've picked up.

The 910 page book is filled with heavy research and plenty of great real world examples. One of the first things I noticed was that many of the references were from the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s. This tells me that the authors went back to old school style and not just internet searches for content. If you do nothing else, get this book just for the bibliography. It is amazing because it is filled with old ideas that we still haven't learned in security.

From a depth standpoint, this book should be mandatory reading for anyone after they obtain their CISSP. The Pfleegers and Margulies do a great job of presenting deeper understandings of security concepts along with pictures and examples from recent security failures. They stick to the basics of confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) but build off of those to show the reader how those concepts extend to a much wider field of study.

This is not a classroom textbook, this is a manual on digital security with all the juicy stories that didn't make the headlines and all the original papers written before blogs existed. You will find exercises at the end of each chapter that are fairly well written but it's kind of difficult to complete the exercises when your jaw is still on the floor. There is just too much great information in each page not to laugh (or cry) to yourself about how far we haven’t come in this field.

Security in Computing is in it's fifth edition, which just came out a few months into 2015. The ink is still wet but I didn't see much updated information from the fourth edition. But than again, security hasn't fixed many mistakes in the two and half decades I've been in it so I figure there isn't much new catastrophes to talk about. Sony is still messing up, that hasn't changed. Passwords are still weak. Applications are still poorly written. Hardware has bugs at the firmware level. I'm hard pressed to think on anything new to add that isn't already covered in this huge book.

I guess they could have talked about Hillary Clinton and her private email server or Target's data breach but that would just remind us of other security errors from the past. One of my favorite parts of this book is how each topic is clearly explained but not dumbed-down. I'm not the brightest guy but I do like the author to write at the appropriate level. The diagrams and pictures are helpful if you are really into flow carts. Some are even pretty funny.

Across the board, there isn't a topic that wasn't covered in this book. Okay, there were some things that could have been added but nothing that would make a big difference to this high quality book. Just to give you an idea of how big the reference material is: there are 27 pages of bibliographic information at the back of the book, all written in fine print. I needed to wear two pair of glasses to read some of those resources.

If you are interested in learning a heck of a lot more about our history and future as security professionals, you'll need this book. You will not pass any certification, get any special initials after your last name, or even earn a promotion for reading this book. However, if you are passionate about this field, I highly suggest you buy this book and read it. Older folks will appreciate the nods to those who taught us. Younger readers will appreciate where we came from before security vendors took over this profession.

Amazing amount of information

This book is a beast!!! It is 100 % textbook, with a lot of exercises at the end of the chapters. If your class uses this book, get ready for a fire hose of information. It covers a ton of topics and covers them in depth.

Although it is a text book the authors do there best to keep it interesting. I really enjoyed the sidebars that include true stories of security breaches. I really like the ones that find out what the criminal was thinking. Some of the reasons for doing what they do are nuts.

One of the biggest problems with security I see today is the security teams oftentimes don't know what to secure, or how to secure stuff when they do. This book starts out with a really nice introduction to what computer security is. The author discusses Values of Assets, the Vulnerability–Threat–Control Paradigm, Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Types of Threats, Types of Attackers, Risk and Common Sense, Method–Opportunity–Motive, Vulnerabilities, and Controls. By the time you are done this chapter you have a high level few of today's security issues.

I was glad to see information on regulations, compliance, and laws. They can wreak havoc on an organization's productivity when left to an unqualified security team. I usually find that IT organizations that have locked down everything from the Internet to your USBs, have no concept of how to implement security in a managed and efficient way.

Years ago I was the lead research and development on a contract with the state. They allowed no internet except for 2 PCs that all 250 people on the project had to use. 90% of the time they were tied up with people checking their personal email. That was the days before smart phones. I would have to go home, research stuff, download it and burn it to CD, and take it in to work. I understand the thoughts behind natural immunity, but separating yourself from the world you are trying to successfully build software for, leads to software that doesn't meet the needs of that world.

More recently I was tasked with building a mobile application. The company had a guest wireless connection in place, but it was so locked down we couldn't use it. We needed to get data plans for the phones to test the applications. They also had emails with attachments reviewed by help desk personnel that would then release them. They basically are operating like the state project I mentioned above. Yet every security audit is failed.

This book does a great job of covering all the security topics you need to know about to work successfully in a decent size enterprise. The detail and depth of each topic amazed me.

A highlight of this book is that after the detailed introduction at the beginning of the book, each chapter contains topics you can read in isolation, while at the same time they are logically tied together.

Another highlight is that the book contains both timeless information and current information doing a really good job of tying the history of a topic to the current state of a topic. For example, the chapter on Cloud computing contains basic information on SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, as well as sidebars on current research happening today that isn't quite ready for release to the world.

Over all I highly recommend this book not only students that need it for a course, but to everyone that has any interest in learning more about the world of security. For the amount of information and the clarity of its delivery, this book is absolutely worth the price.

A great introduction to Organotherapy, Drainage and Detoxification

Organotherapy, Drainage and Detoxification is a vitally important aspect of healing from chronic and autoimmune diseases. Detoxification is so much more than going on a cleanse or fast, or taking a binder such as cracked cell chlorella or zeolite. It is a process of preparing and supporting the organs of elimination such as the liver, lungs and kidneys so when the toxins are released the organs are not additionally stressed or degenerated. It is also a matter of using the right therapeutics to help draw out the toxins lodged in the cells to help restore optimal cell function. Joe's book is a great introduction to this subject. Organotherapy and drainage have been practiced in Europe for many decades but much of the information on this topic is not available in English. In writing this book Joe makes at least some of this information more accessible, but it is by no means complete as this is a complex subject that would fill many books. I also suggest researching the term Biotherapeutic Drainage for more on this important topic.

My go-to book

I use this book faithfully with my clientele' due to how much it is broken down to its most minute concept. The homework assignments in it are so easy to follow and breaks down the various illnesses so well such as depression, anger, anxiety and other ailments that client's really have that "AHA" moment when doing the homework. If they don't, they just don 't want to.

I have purchased more of the "Dummies" series books and they have helped. Some clients have returned my books in favor of purchasing their own so they could highlight in them and share informatino with familymembers and other.

This book is extremely well done. As an individual trained in CBT, I can say that it is very accurate to the school and methodology. It explains things very well, in a way that is understandable to people who don't know a lot about the field, in fact I have quoted from it in therapy sessions to help explain concepts to clients! In addition it can be useful for working things out on your own, I've found the worksheets very helpful in dealing with some of my own anxious thoughts. An excellent book, and would highly recommend.

This book is well-written, easy to use and easy to understand. It takes you step-by-step through the process of changing your behavior by realizing what is causing the behavior. I have overcome a problem I have been dealing with for more than 15 years by using the principles in this book.

Good and simple book!!!!

The Habit of Winning is not a seminal work nor is it an earth shaking management classic. It is a cleanly written, easy to read, attractively packaged affordable paperback which will appeal to the common man looking for a tip or two for self improvement. There is no laundry list of dos and don’ts, there is no moral lecturing, there is no pontificating – the author imparts his message through stories. And, mind you, most of these are contemporary real life stories which you can relate with these and not teaching stories or inspirational gems of ancient wisdom, parables or fables, except for a few familiar ones like The Water Bearer, The Cracked Pot and Making a Difference, The Starfish Way.
The author talks about mental barriers. He cites Robin Sharma's allusion to the invisible barriers. It takes a long time to break a record. But once broken several others start surpassing the benchmark in quick succession.
I also liked - The story of two earthen pots, the 1 degree extra attitude, the way mixing of sugar in milk has been compared with having an impact on the team by a good leader. I am not elaborating on that because that will be a spoiler.
There is a strong emphasis on giving. A cow and dog have been used as metaphors to symbolize giving and taking mentality. Cow always gives - milk, manures, leather and other useful things and dog always snatches, fights for territory, food, bones etc.
The book is very readable. The chapters are short, just one story per chapter, and end with a message encapsulating the gist of the story. A good pick me up, you can open any page, start reading anywhere, and finish a chapter in a couple of minutes, this book is an ideal companion while travelling or waiting or just about anywhere.
The meat of the book is not in the middle, but right at the beginning in Part I – VISION AND GOALS in which I particularly liked the chapter DON’T CHANGE YOUR HABIT that emphasizes the importance of focus which I feel is most relevant today where you are surrounded by an environment of distractions and multitasking. I will not tell you any more about the stories in the book – those you must read and enjoy yourself.

A good read. One wouldn't be disappointed after reading it. The writer has tried to bring home the point he is making thro' real life snippets.
One more thing, buy it thro' kindle store, that's the cheapest option.

I suggest not to buy this book, if you like serious and inspiring read

This book is meant for small children. The so called inspiring stories are so shallow that you can't get inspired by them. I didnt like the book may be because I have much expectations from it when i bought it. The stories are very short (just 2-3 pages) mainly are fictions (like is esop's fables where aminals talk) and small (very small can be treated as trivial) incidents in the life of successful people. I suggest not to buy this book, if you like serious and inspiring read.
