A First Auden, better than ever

Over four Christmases, this title sat on my Amazon wish list, ignored by my wife. This year, I bought it myself and let her wrap it for me. How lucky that, while my wish for this book sat ungranted, Edward Mendelson added explanatory notes and twenty poems to his original selection. The additional poems in this "Expanded Edition" include the lovely "Funeral Blues," whose recitation in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" provided most of that movie's emotional heft and social import.

The poems that Mendelson, Auden's literary executor, selected for this volume are printed here in their first book-published versions. Mendelson also edited Auden's "Collected Poems," from which Auden himself excluded some poems and for which he revised others. Mendelson discusses the choice between "Selected Poems" and "Collected Poems" in the Introduction to this book:

"The present selection ... [reprints] the texts of Auden's early editions and [includes] poems that he later rejected. A historical edition of this kind, one that reflects the author's work as it first appeared in public rather than his final version of it, is not intended as an argument that Auden's revisions or rejections were arbitrary or misguided; he had strong literary and ethical motives for choosing them, and in almost every instance they produced versions of his poems that were more coherent and complex than the originals. Probably the best way to experience Auden's work is to read the early versions first for their greater immediate impact, and the revised versions afterward for their greater subtlety and depth. For most readers this book will be a First Auden, and the edition of his 'Collected Poems' that was published posthumously according to his final intentions may be recommended as a Second."

For lovers of Auden's poetry

W.H. Auden was a twentieth century English poet. He emphasized the individual, past and present, in their frail condition.

Auden's writing varied as to subject, style, and type as he aged. Love poems, politics, culture, morals, individuals; what a wealth of poetry the public has from Auden because of the number of years he lived and wrote. Twenty poems have been added to this expanded edition including some of Auden's lighter poems. This aids the reader, student, or lover of Auden to see a more complex, complete, fuller and well-rounded poet.

A nice touch within the volume was the inclusion of brief notes explaining references that might be unclear. Other positive features consisted of chronological arrangement of material, and an index of titles and first lines.

Armchair Interviews says: A must for all Auden students, whether a casual reader or lover of his poetry.

Providing an introduction to electronic materials and device concepts for the major areas of current and future information technology, the value of this book lies in its focus on the underlying principles. Illustrated by contemporary examples, these basic principles will hold for many years, despite the rapid developments in this field. There is hardly any other field where the links between basic science and application are tighter than in nanoelectronics and information technology. As an example, the design of tunneling field effect transistors, single electron devices or molecular electronic structures is simply inconceivable without delving deep into quantum mechanics. This textbook is primarily aimed at students of physics, electrical engineering and information technology, as well as material science in their 3rd year and higher. It is equally of interest to professionals wanting a broader overview of this hot topic.

About the Author
The Editor:
Rainer Waser is Professor at the faculty for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the RWTH Aachen University and director at the Institute of Solid State Research (IFF) at the HGF Research Center J?lich, Germany. In 1984, he received his PhD in physical chemistry at the University of Darmstadt, and worked at the Philips Research Laboratory, Aachen, until he was appointed professor in 1992. His research group is focused on fundamental aspects of electronic materials and on such integrated devices as non-volatile memories, specifically ferroelectric memories, logic devices, sensors and actuators. Throughout, he has been collaborating with major semiconductor industries in Europe, the US, and the Far East. He has organized international conferences, published about 200 technical papers and holds ten patents. In 2000, Dr. Waser has been honored with the IEEE Ferroelectrics Recognition Award, and since 2002 he has been the coordinator of the research program Nanoelectronic Systems within the German National Research Centers (Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft).

A Reference Guide to Vector Algebra (Paperback)
by T. P. Humphreys (Author)+ CD is a good start or refresher for those who need to analyze vectors and forces (both 2 and 3 D). The companion CD is very helpful to those of us who have long forgotten the actual calculations and vector rules. At times the book seems "busy", but overall, a great addition to any engineering library. I have looked (off and on) for years for this type of book/CD and how have it. The only suggestion I can offer would be to have a few more examples in the book (and how they are solved using the companion CD).

Great Book and a Helpful Addition to AP Math & AP Physics

I purchased this book for my grandson. He is a high-school student taking AP Math and AP Physics. After using it for several weeks his grades began to improve; in fact, by the end of the month his grades in AP Math and AP Physics were up a letter grade. He especially likes the software CD that comes with it. One thing he particularly likes is that he can check his homework problems with the vector calculator software. It was a great supplement to his textbook and was certainly less expensive than a tutor. I wish more parents and grandparents knew about this book. It certaintly has improved my grandson's enjoyment of Math and Physics.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

This was required reading for one of my master's classes in history. The book design is simple but sufficient. It provides background on each of the three Luther treatises before presenting them in Luther's original words. It is great for those researching Luther or anyone who just likes to read his works.

2. The Babylonian Captivity of the Church . . . Luther's reorganization of the sacramental system

3. The Freedom of a Christian

Luther takes on the Roman Catholic Church and none too kindly. Important to both the history of Christianity and the history of Germany -- and of course to all practicing Lutherans. It might even be eye-opening to many Lutherans today who only know of Luther from his catechism.

excellent background to Lutheran doctrine

This book is a fine exposition of the central issues of Lutheran doctrine, and reveals three of the major pivot points of the Protestant Reformation: freedom from enforced piety, rejection of hierarchical polity, and rejection of non-Biblical sacraments. In addition, the translation is clear and straightforward while retaining the delightful spirit of Luther's German, shifting effortlessly between the polemical and the comic.
This is a must-read for anyone who calls herself a Lutheran.

Good book for beginners, intermediate and even heavily experienced guys.

I won't make a long review like the others and those other reviews are really old too. I bought this book once back in the winter of 2009 off of here and when I got the book, I spent alot of time going over it. I thought it was written very well and thought out well. The book is targeted mainly to 3rd Generation F-Body's or Camaro's and Firebird's but there's stuff in there about LT1's and some early 98 LS1 cars. There also info in there that pertains to Corvette's from the mid-late 1980's into the mid-1990's. The book is very informative on TPI and LT1's and the pictures help alot too. When this was written not alot was known about LS1's then so some folks don't like it because of that. This is a very helpful book for any guy who wants to modify his SBC 305 or more so the 350 L98 TPI. It gives insight into the bolt-on's, engine mods, exhaust mods, suspension and chassis, history on our cars, etc. It's an awesome book and I just bought a 2nd copy last night since my original book was ruined by spilled coolant.

Immigration officials sometimes lose documents, time-sensitive papers get caught up in the Nica post office for longer than expected and sometimes a dog really does eat your homework. Relax. This is a process and there are many steps. Even if frustration sets in, know that as long as you are moving forward you are making progress. Have patience. Keep at it. I did it and you can do it too!

About the Author
Yes, I am a Nicaraguan resident. I started the process in November, 2013 by going to the immigration office. After seeing the wall of requirements I went to a lawyer. He agreed to help me for $500, then dropped my case to take on a higher-paying gig. So what I did was to tough it out, starting at the top and working my way down the requirements list until I had everything. Some things weren’t correct and I had to do them over. Some things were required and then weren’t. Still other documents were needed last-minute and then there were the fees. And signatures. And translations. And then my dog got ahold of my papers and, well, that dog now has a new home. Helping people is what I love doing. My day job is building schools in rural Nicaragua. For five years before that I was bringing light and clean water to communities in this country. I love Nicaragua and I love showing people what this country has to offer. And if you love this country enough to consider becoming a resident then I would love to get to know you. I live here. In Managua, actually. My home is the same one that my wife has been living in since she was born. Our kids go to school here. My Spanish has gotten pretty good even though I still have trouble understanding country accents. I love it so much that I convinced my mother, a home-grown little-city girl from Southeast Texas to move to Granada.

Required Reading for all Residency Seekers in Nicaragua

Wow, this is everything I was expecting and way more. The information in here is very comprehensive and it has already saved me headaches at the immigration office.

The only complaint is that the book is a bit big to fit in my small pack. It would be easier to carry around if it were smaller and fatter to get all of the info in. And there is a LOT of info!

If you are thinking of getting residency in Nicaragua, this book is a MUST HAVE.
