Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch: Essays On Race and Sexuality (Sexual Cultures), by Dwight McBride

Why hate Abercrombie? In a world rife with human cruelty and oppression, why waste your scorn on a popular clothing retailer? The rationale, Dwight A. McBride argues, lies in “the banality of evil,” or the quiet way discriminatory hiring practices and racist ad campaigns seep into and reflect malevolent undertones in American culture.

McBride maintains that issues of race and sexuality are often subtle and always messy, and his compelling new book does not offer simple answers. Instead, in a collection of essays about such diverse topics as biased marketing strategies, black gay media representations, the role of African American studies in higher education, gay personal ads, and pornography, he offers the evolving insights of one black gay male scholar.

As adept at analyzing affirmative action as dissecting Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, McBride employs a range of academic, journalistic, and autobiographical writing styles. Each chapter speaks a version of the truth about black gay male life, African American studies, and the black community. Original and astute, Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch is a powerful vision of a rapidly changing social landscape.

From Publishers Weekly
"Where does the black gay man go where he can see himself reflected back to himself in all the complex ways in which he exists in the world?" asks the chair of the African American Studies department at Northwestern University. In this collection of 10 smart, provocative essays, McBride explores, from varying vantage points (interracial gay male porn; the essays of Cornel West; the racial implications of Ellen DeGeneres's coming-out show; the way the hair and clothing guidelines for Abercrombie & Fitch employees ensure an almost all-white staff), the tenuous position of a clear, distinct, gay black male presence and voice in cultural discourse and argues for an end to the relative silence. Some of McBride's analysis is perceptive but unsurprising (e.g., his short piece on the role of rage and frustration in the 1995 Los Angeles riots), and his focus on the "bourgeois, well-educated, fairly cosmopolitan gay man" largely shrugs off discussions of class. But much of this collection breaks new ground for contemporary cultural criticism. McBride's look at homophobia in traditional African-American studies is an empathetic but penetrating critique of the discipline, and his explication of the ghettoization of black men in gay male porn (which moves into a more complicated discussion of online sex sites) is truly original work with ramifications well outside of queer studies.

the gay bruthaman breaks it down!
By Jeffery Mingo
This book consists of diverse musings from Dr. Dwight McBride, a gay black man and the chair of African-American studies at Northwestern. He covers myriad topics such as Toni Morrison, the "Ellen" coming-out episode, gay personals websites, and much more. He bar-hops a lot too.

McBride brings up several concerns consistently, and these are the areas where black intellectuals have consensus. He assesses and envisions both the present and future of African-American studies on college campuses. He is forthrightly in support of affirmative action. He is very concerned about who gets to speak and who is taken as truthful in our society. (He does not mention postcolonialist theory but I wondered if he borrowed some of these ideas from Bhabha and Spivak.) He throws around a phrase "compassion fatigue," a very right-on concept in this post-PC, Bush the Second era.

I absolutely love the cover art here. It takes "Paris is Burning" and gives it a butch twist. I have got to find out more about the photographer. In the same way that lay reviewers screamed to know more about the cover work on Siobhan Somerville's "Queering the Color Line," I think other readers and viewers will be equally curious here.

The title of this book is bold. As much as members of the Left condemn multinational corporations, there is a reason to fear them too. I guess McBride is not worried that Abercrombie won't seek revenge upon him. (He never mentions that hit pop song from 1999, by the way.) The title is both anti-capitalist and diva!-tized. It both imitates and stands against the class-privileged, spoiled youth that might did the clothing chain.

McBride refers to the black, gay demographic study "Say It Out Loud!" in several places. That study clearly stated that the grand majority of LGBT blacks don't like the word "queer," yet he freely and frequently uses it here. That must be a sign of spending most of one's time on a college campus.

In the book "A Latina in Hollywood," Dr. Valdivia has chapters that are specific to LatinAs and many that apply to women across racial categories. Similarly, McBride talks about many black, gay matters, but he also focuses on non-gay-specific black matters. When the subtitle states "race and sexuality," it really implies "race AND/OR sexuality." I think this is a great way for double-minority scholars not to be doubly ghetto-ized when it comes to their opinions and ideas. I support this flexibility and think that those interested in intersectionality might find it particularly useful.

McBride is great at bringing up race and sexual orientation matters simultaneously. He notes how a mainstream press article on "the lack of black men" really means the lack of STRAIGHT black men. He calls out heterosexism that many readers wouldn't have bothered to consider. In saying that it takes longer than one sound byte to justify affirmative action, he notes that it takes just as much extended time to challenge homophobic marriage arguments. Despite being an Ivy League graduate and a professor at a prestigious university, McBride tries to bring up socioeconomic issues as much as possible. I love the multi-hued vision here.

Still, there are times when he could have employed that same double vision and failed to do so. He assesses Dr. Cornel West, a heterosexual black male scholar and never mentions how valiantly pro-gay West has been for years. He analyzes Toni Morrison but never mentions that several black gay writers have deemed her work homophobic (Crichlow and Simmons, for example). He repeats the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas controversy but never mentions that foes accused her of both being a lesbian and lusting after a male boss. When discussing the Ellen episode, he mentions Oprah Winfrey as the racial signifier, but never mentions Jenny Shimizu, who made the show for me, a Japanese-American lesbian model who shattered the show's problematic tendency to make all the lesbian characters white.

Even more, I had problems with this book structurally. In a beginning chapter "Straight Black Studies," he mentions heterosexism in black studies for a second and then proceeds to discuss James Baldwin at length. He could have put his musings in the last chapter, another Baldwin essay. With a title like that, you would have thought he'd add to ideas from Simmons' "Some Challenges Facing the Black Gay Intellectual" but he disappointingly fails to do so. His chapter on Anita Hill says NOTHING on the matter that Morrison's anthology "Racing Justice, Engendering Power" hadn't. It was really just a way for him as a black gay man to say, "Yes! I support the sisters."

His largest chapter is subtitled "Race in the Gay Marketplace of Desire." Much of what he says is on point and will open the eyes of many. However, he says that he is going to mention extremely explicit things about himself. He quotes Reid-Pharr and Gary Fisher to ease the reader in and then he says rather tame things about himself. His confessions are not half as erotic as things written by gay academics such as D'Emilio, Delaney, or J.M. Rodriguez. I think he could have found Kobena Mercer's and Richard Fung's work helpful here. When he does mention himself, he says he dates "the rainbow coalition," yet only provides anecdotes between him and white men. Like the classic essay "Playing with the Master's Tools," this essay becomes Eurocentric. It almost can't even imagine romance between two black men or two men of color.

Though I like this book and hated Reid-Pharr's "GBM: Essays," I do think the texts have much in common. I think the editors of this series want scholars to throw in everything and the kitchen sink. Lay readers will like the second part of this book while the first and last parts may confuse them. Bringing up Hugo, Sisyphus, Marx, and several others demonstrates that McBride has much cultural capital and is not limited to race or sexual orientation as topics.

Commendable but a Bit Light Weight
By Null Mann
First let me say that any academic text that gives voice to my black gay brothers and sisters is commendable, given the deaf ear usually turned to such voices. However, I can't give "Hate Abercrombie" more than three stars because it offers fairly straightforward observations that most thinking black gay folks have swapped over their own happy hour tables and coffee klatches.

Though the title essay and most of the others are interesting and provocative, McBride does little more than provoke. He provides neither unifying theory nor original response. The result is a work that is neither academically original nor politically impactful.

McBride apologizes for the personal-anecdotal slant of his writing, but unlike the writers that he quotes--Baldwin, hooks and Hemphill among others--he muffles his personal outrage and its transgressive power in hyper-academic babble. The resulting text is needlessly inaccessible to novice academics and mainstream African-Americans, but not quite "deep" enough for hardcore academia.

In my opinion, had McBride's book not dealt with such a specialized academic niche (black gay studies), it would never have made it into print in its current form.

Don't get me wrong, McBride is a talented observer and competent writer, but he should pick a genre. I'd be happy to see him hone his intellectualism so that he earns a place next to hooks and West; but it would truly thrill me to see him aim his pen toward the thinking black mainstream and become the fiery transformative essayist that I suspect that he is at heart.

Getting Serious About Intersectional Analyses
By JVS
Dwight McBride, in his book, Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch, pens a work that attempts to transform African American Studies while firmly positioning himself within it, arguing that it is crucial that black gay men and black lesbian be acknowledged and made visible parts of the black community.

Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch is organized into three sections: the first proposes different applications for serious analyses of race and gender; the second foregrounds politics, particularly of the emerging field of black queer/gay and lesbian studies in relationship to the heretofore emphasis within African American Studies of race as a lens of analysis instead of a truly intersectional approach which also looks centrally at sexuality (along with gender and class); lastly, the third section focuses more specifically on McBride's theoretical and academic lineage of thinking about race and sexuality.

Early in the book, McBride furthers his claims to the necessity of being able to hear the voices of black gay men and black lesbians by citing queer theory's latency in dealing with its own racism, as well as through a discussion of the politics of respectability, which for blacks foregrounds the conflicting desire for capital with the whiteness of capital.

Ultimately, McBride's purpose is to radically transform the ways in which we think about race in order to effect change in the ways in which we (re-)imagine "the black community"; he is firm in his desire to get others to recognize the diversity that the black community already contains in our everyday realities, and to abandon the false perception of a monolithic black community. He makes evident his deep investment in "the black community" and to African American Studies, while also making clear his politics of location as a black gay man within white-dominated academia, offering a poignant and persuasive personal perspective, as well as a critical analysis for such change in African American Studies.

While not all the essays in this book seem to me accessible to students in Introduction to African American Studies or Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Studies courses, a good number of essays are, and would be a great addition on syllabi.

Excellent African Photography Guide
By jeMiller
I'm a professional wildlife photographer and spend a considerable time each year in Africa trying to get the best images possible. I'm always trying to improve my craft so have read several animal photography guide book recently (including several specifically written on African wildlife photography). Hands-down this is the by far the best guide I've ever read on this specifically subject. The author goes into great detail to explain why certain camera settings work with certain conditions or with certain types of images that you're trying to make. This is a wonderful book! If you've never been to Africa but planning to go, or if you're going back and want to improve your images, then this book is a "must have" for you.

Definitely not worth the price.
By Martin J. Feldman, M.D.
Having been to Africa on a photo safari, I ordered this book seeking additional advice. I was very disappointed. Considering the cost, I found the paper to look and feel very cheap. The images themselves were nice in terms of composition and action, but not very well printed. The photo advice was very basic and not necessary for anyone having at least some familiarity with a digital camera and lens. There were some good suggestions regarding composition, but again all very basic and of limited value to me. Indeed, there are better and cheaper books out there. Needless to say, after a quick but fairly thorough once over, I returned the book the next day.

Overpriced for what you get
By J. Scarff
Way overpriced for what you get IMO. The author is fascinated by lions and cheetahs. Nothing wrong with that, except that it seems 50+% of the photos are of lions or cheetahs, with most of the remainder being of big mammals. There are only a few photos of birds, and those only the large birds such as vultures and eagles. Many of the lion shots are taken at very close range which are among the easier photos to take in Africa.

The advice, which is what one pays for, seems simplistic to me. This may have value for a person who has never done any wildlife photography before, but for someone who is an active hobbyist, or pro, you probably already know all this (e.g. look at your histogram to check exposure) and the Africa-specific advice seems nothing more than what one could easily find on-line for free or a lot less money.

On a more subjective note, I was unhappy with the printing and photos in this book. It uses a large sans serif font and wide margins. On my copy the printing was weird with some pages having a dirty gray matte around the edge and others not. The author's photographs did not appeal to me either. It may be the printing again, since the colors seem unsaturated and the white balance off. The photos also appear to me either too sharpened or muddy like a watercolor. This may be an artifact of the non-glossy paper the book is printed on.

The author talks about his photo settings for different photos, but there are no illustrations about what the photo might look like if you had different or default settings, so the educational value is reduced.

The author's advice is generally good advice. My problem is that I learned very, very little from this expensive book, and did not get the inspiration I get from books like Art Wolfe's "Africa" (Africa Jane Goodall

Amazon.com Review
Tired of being manipulated and taken advantage of? Want to learn how to influence and motivate others, turn associates into friends, and win in any competition? Then consider reading Get Anyone to Do Anything and Never Feel Powerless Again by David J. Lieberman, bestselling author of Never Be Lied to Again and nationally recognized leader in the field of human behavior.

Based on psychological principles, this book is less about manipulation and more about observing and influencing people (including yourself) and learning how to take control of situations. Most of Lieberman's techniques are straightforward, user-friendly, and practical. You'll learn simple ways to make a fantastic first impression, get people to return your phone calls, and stop a rumor before it ruins you. You don't even have to read the text to benefit. To help you get the upper hand quickly, strategies are reviewed at the end of each chapter. While some suggestions are obvious (smile and make eye contact), the five sections and 40 chapters contain many gems that can help improve your life. --Ellen Albertson

From Publishers Weekly
Confident and persuasive, Bryce's voice is perfect for this audiobook about influencing others to do as you wish (by the author of the bestselling Never Be Lied to Again). Bryce frequently varies the inflections in his voice, resulting in an expressive reading that's pleasing to the ear. There's no padding on this lean audio: after the briefest of introductions, it cuts to the chase, presenting simple, concise techniques. Although the title is an overstatement, Lieberman does offer useful strategies rooted in basic human psychology and supported by numerous studies. For example, a person tends to like you more after he or she does you a favor, not the other way around. (Subconsciously, he assumes that he must like you, since he helped you.) Another tip: to get someone to find you attractive, set the first date in an environment of heightened physical arousal, like an amusement park. The person will interpret his or her adrenaline rush and rapid heartbeat as sexual desire for whomever he or she is with. Simultaneous release with the St. Martin's hardcover.

Scripted How to Win Friends and Influence People
By Donald Mitchell
This is a derivative work with script added, that builds on the psychological research of others. That approach can be beneficial, as long as you color between the lines.
Lieberman promises you the moon. "This book contains only specific psychological tactics governing human behavior that will let you outsmart, outthink, and out maneuver . . . anyone, any place, anytime." After reading the book, I beg to differ. No book, and not this one, can do that much.
If you are familiar with neuro-linguistic programming, Tony Robbins' work, and Robert Cialdini's work (Influence), you will find almost nothing new here.
As usual, I watched closely to see what Lieberman would have to say about manipulation. His strongest argument is that everyone wants to help everyone else, and you are just making it easier for them to help you. Hmmm! Are you persuaded? If you are, rate the book a little higher.
I thought several of the scripts were flawed, but many were quite good. The main problem related to being manipulative. But each of us has our own standards. If you are an unethical person looking to take advantage of someone, the methods in this book would often work all right for you.
Frankly, I prefer the more balanced approach of Stephen Covey and Robert Cialdini in addressing when and where psychological tools can and should be used.
The book is well done for what it is. If you don't share my concern about manipulation, be sure to read it. If you fear being manipulated, then be doubly sure to read it. Someone is bound to use these scripts on you at some time or other. Reading the book will be a good vaccine. Then you can resist what is truly not in your favor.

way overstated
By Wyote
Ok, think for a minute. Get "anyone" to do "anything." Wow! "Never feel powerless again!" Never ever! "With psychological secrets" (ooooh, science) "to control and influence every situation!" Every single one! Imagine, you can be a god!

If the title doesn't alert you to the fact, there is a lot of overstatement in this book. A lot. From the title to the last sentence, it never stops, it never gets less ridiculous.

On the other hand, check out that subtitle again: "Never Feel Powerless Again." Do you often feel powerless? If so, you will probably learn a lot from this book. Actually, the book is full of sound advice, insight into human relationships straight from actual academic psychological research. Even if you don't feel powerless often, you will probably find some decent tips in here that will improve your relationships with other people.

I'm not sure which to emphasize: the fact that there is a lot of sound advice, or the fact that this author is clearly a salesman targeting socially insecure people and promising them more than he (or anyone) can ever deliver.

It's not bad advice, but it is bad form.

Anyway, if you think you could benefit from reading this book, you probably could. It helps me to browse it every so often, reviewing some of the principles he discusses.

This guy is a stud!
By Thomas G. Bradford
I never thought I'd say that about a psychologist. In fact the more I re-read it (the title I gave these comments) I'm shocked. I don't usually like them. My impression of them is that they listen to people who have no one to talk to and rape them for their cash (which I find reprehensible). BUT. This guy has done excellent research (my hats off). These are the things I loved about his book:
1. The purpose of the book is not to control and manipulate like the title suggests, but rather to illuminate.
2. It's packed with information (short 2-3 page chapters, summaries of the important points at the end: I.E. you can skip the verbage and go straight for the bullet points.)
3. It's obviously correct. Although years of testing and observation produced the conclusions in this book, common sense validates the results. And these aren't the kinds of things you could figure out without his book.
4. It could seriously fix a broken relationship or start a new one with nearly anyone.

Here's an example (I'd normally feel guilty giving examples, but the man has tons):
When you suspect someone of lying present them with a conundrum. The purpose is not to listen to the response but to observe the behavior. Specifically, if your husband tells you he went to the movies with friends. Mention "Oh yeah, I heard that the reason for all of the traffic after work was because of the car accident near the movie theatre. Did you see it?" This creates a stun effect. Two conditions must be met. 1) Heavy Traffic 2) A car accident. If he really went to the movies the response would blurt out, but if he didn't he has to be careful with his answer and he hesitates.

Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language: Hereditary Deafness on Martha's Vineyard, by Nora Ellen Groce

From the seventeenth century to the early years of the twentieth, the population of Martha's Vineyard manifested an extremely high rate of profound hereditary deafness. In stark contrast to the experience of most deaf people in our own society, the Vineyarders who were born deaf were so thoroughly integrated into the daily life of the community that they were not seen--and did not see themselves--as handicapped or as a group apart. Deaf people were included in all aspects of life, such as town politics, jobs, church affairs, and social life. How was this possible?

On the Vineyard, hearing and deaf islanders alike grew up speaking sign language. This unique sociolinguistic adaptation meant that the usual barriers to communication between the hearing and the deaf, which so isolate many deaf people today, did not exist.

Review
When is deafness neither handicap nor stigma? When, as this remarkable book recounts, the entire hearing community learns from childhood to be bilingual in conventional speech and sign language, and when the deaf are wholly integrated into the community's social, economic, religious, and recreational life...A vivid ethnography of a hearing community's full acceptance of, and adaptation to, deafness. Groce also constructs a fascinating ethnohistory of this genetic disorder. (Choice)

Beautiful and fascinating...I was so moved by Groce's book that the moment I finished it I jumped in the car, with only a toothbrush, a tape recorder, and a camera--I had to see this enchanted island for myself. (Oliver Sacks New York Review of Books)

Brilliantly argued and lively...[Groce's] information consists of the oral history she herself garnered from some 50 witnesses, almost all more than 75 years old, and the documents in print and in manuscript that cross-check and extend their first-hand accounts. Human genetic theory, ethnographic counterparts and a clear-eyed account of social attitudes are the analytic tools that form her brief and telling work...[A] persuasive and compassionate investigation. (Scientific American)

Fascinating...Groce accomplishes much just by pointing out that "handicaps" are something a culture creates, and thus the joint responsibility of us all. That's what places this book squarely within the best tradition of anthropological writing, and makes it both moving and encouraging. (Village Voice)

Inspiring and interesting
By absent_minded_prof
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Originally written as an ethnographic study, it is also completely readable for a non-professional popular audience. Basically, it is the story of the islanders of Martha's Vineyard, a large island off the coast of Massachusetts. The islanders originally came from the same 2 or 3 boatloads of colonists from England, by way of Boston and Scituate, from a region in Kent which already seems to have had a high incidence of hereditary deafness. Due to the geographic isolation of the island, recessive genes for deafness, which were already prominent in the original Kentish colonists, came increasingly to the fore. As the proportions of islanders who happened to be deaf gradually increased, what was the islanders' answer? Not shunning the deaf. Far from it. Rather, a tradition arose that EVERYONE on the island, deaf or hearing, simply learned sign language as children!
This book is full of fascinating little anecdotes, about how island society worked to include its deaf members. For example, we learn about families and friends, some deaf and some hearing, who would regularly sit next to each other in church. The hearing members would sign the sermons to their deaf friends. Or, sometimes groups of people who could hear perfectly well might be together, for whatever reason, and they might happen to converse by signing just as much as in spoken English. Everyone spoke both languages.
Some of my favorite parts of the book focus on the benefits of signing. For example, perhaps two neighbors wanted to converse, while being separated by 200 yards of noisy space, made vocally impenetrable by sounds of surf and sea. Whether they were deaf or hearing, they could get out their spyglasses (this was a 19th century whaling community, where spyglasses were in every household) and sign to each other across the distance while viewing each other through the magnification afforded by the spyglasses. One entertaining anecdote tells of two young men, who could hear perfectly well, who would use their signing ability to pick up girls off-island. They would pique the girls' interest in them by signing amongst themselves, and would claim that one of them was deaf. After they had secured the girls' interest, they would put on a lengthy, well-practiced charade of deafness to keep the gils curious about them. Do they ever let on that they can really hear? You'll have to read the book to find out! Bwa ha ha haaaa ( that's the sound of an evil laugh).
Those are a few minor anecdotes. The whole book is packed with stories like that, and it's endlessly amazing. The last couple of chapters make excellent, general points about the human issues raised in the book, and about how we as a society think about the "handicapped" -- perhaps, as Dr. Groce points out, we should not use the term in the first place.
Anyway, I'm really pleased to call attention to this book. I wish it were more widely known. If you're reading this because you linked to my reviewer's page from my review of "Jeepers Creepers," or something at a similar level, then, well, I'm just happy you're reading about this valuable story as well as "Jeepers Creepers." Two thumbs up.

Wonderful!

Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language is a wonderful look at the Deaf population on Martha's Vineyard and the extent to which it was integrated with the Hearing community. Groce's research is supurb and she draws interesting and relevant conclusions. I highly recommend this book to anyone studying ASL/Deaf Studies or someone who is just interested in the topic.

An interesting look at a unique deaf cultue
By H
"Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language" is a look at the effect of a large deaf population on Martha's Vineyard. Though a dry read at times, this book gives an interesting look at how for once in the history of deaf culture the *hearing* adapted for the deaf instead of vice versa. While most people might assume that the large deaf population would force a hefty amount of deaf people to adapt to hearing life, the opposite was actually true; the brilliance of Martha's Vineyard was that nearly all hearing people knew sign language to some degree.
The book analyses cultural impact of the large deaf population within the Vineyard's communities, which was biologically caused by the genetic predisposition for deafness. The book, largely written like an anthropological study, focuses on both physical and cultural aspect of the deafness in the communities. However, the most interesting implications within the book are those discussing deaf and hearing interrelations.
