Promises more than it delivers!

A Guide To Deduction is an interesting book. Written by Hannah Rogers, the Author of The Art of Deduction and website: http://aguidetodeduction.tumbler.com.

While reading the book, I got the sense the author intended it to be a book written on how to be a detective. Each chapter has a quote from “SH,” which I assumed is Sherlock Holmes. The book is essentially a collection of deductive rules of thumb taken from her tumbler blog. These short deductive rules cover such areas as spotting things about a person at work, writing, sports, travel, home, lying and health. The author does not include any proof to back up her assertions regarding the deductions she lists. The book also has many typos and words missing in the middle of sentences. It has a simple index but provides no additional sources for further research and training.

Other books on how to deduce people, such as The Monographs, How To Instantly Size-Up Strangers Like Sherlock Holmes and The Deduction Guide are better suited for deducing people because they show you how to actually do it. Mastermind: How To Think Like Sherlock Holmes shows you how Sherlock thinks but not how to think like him and make the deductions he makes.

Another major gripe I have with A Guide To Deduction is the manipulation of the Amazon ratings. It seems that after the book first came out on December 10th, someone named “anonymous” gave it a bad one star review on December 18th. Then suddenly on December 23rd, the book received 10 five star ratings and good reviews (most which were not verified purchases). Also, on the UK amazon website, author Ben Cardall also gave the book a glowing 5 star review, which seemed suspicious to me being that both A Guide To Deduction and The Monographs are published by MX Publishing. I believe most of the reviews for this book are designed to pump up the ratings and increase the book sales.

I liked the book but it is not as amazing as some of the other reviews would have you believe. In my opinion, it promises more than it delivers.

Guide to Deduction

The first thing I noticed was this book could have used a good editor. Words are missing here and there and sometimes it is difficult to understand what the author is trying to say. Some facts are given that seem questionable. A remark is made that smallpox vaccinations were common in anyone born before 1977. But I know someone who was born in 1970 and never got such a vaccination which would have happened if it had been required. While a lot of the contents were interesting there was little fleshing out of the facts to back them up. I did enjoy reading it. It is another of the many books a diligent Sherlockian should own. I just wish the author had put more effort into it.

About the Author
Bruce Jay Friedman lives in New York City. A novelist, short story writer, playwright, memoirist, and screenwriter, he is the author of nineteen books, including�Stern�(1962),�A Mother’s Kisses�(1964),�The Lonely Guy’s Book of Life�(1978), and�Lucky Bruce: A Literary Memoir�(2011). His best-known works of stage and screen include the off-Broadway hit�Steambath�(1970) and the screenplays for�Stir Crazy�(1980) and�Splash�(1984), the latter of which received an Academy Award nomination. As editor of the anthology�Black Humor�(1965), Friedman helped popularize the distinctive literary style of that name in the United States and is widely regarded as one of its finest practitioners. A very funny and elliptically deep book

I first read this in the late 1960s and laughed aloud at its funny and subtle humor. Every turn is unexpected and yet makes sense. Friedman's memoir is called "Lucky Bruce" in reference to Kinsgley Amis's "Lucky Jim" and the book is in Lucky Jim's class, completely memorable after 40 years.

Funniest book ever written

I read this back in the early 60's when I was about 14 or so. I am still laughing. You will not believe the way this guy writes.It is indescribable. If you are lucky enough to come upon a copy, buy it. You will be so glad you did. Bruce Jay Friedman is a national treasure. His take on life is at first glance quite askew..but, upon further reading, you will find that he "writes" like you "think." I've never experienced this with any other writer. Check out his other books, as well...especially the Lonely Guy's book of Life.

Throw Mama from the train

This is a one joke novel stretched across 300 pages. While the main character, Joseph, does develop it is on the last page and we have to put up with many repetitive, predictable comic situations to get there. The term 'Smother Love' could easily have come into existence from this novel. Joseph's mother Meg is a powerful personality who co-opts everyone near her. The novel details Joseph's attempts to break away from her and her difficulty in letting go. He fights being a mama's boy all his life. While he despises her actions he comes to realize that he does love her. The reader becomes aware of the depth of feeling each has in this possessive relationship. All sorts of Freudian undertones are present though they may sometime be a bit too obvious. It reads like a comedian writing a psychological textbook.
This book may have been a liberating influence in that it opened the way (along with Roth's Portnoy's Complaint) to the popularization of ethnic humor which is today's pervasive style. That would give it a place in literary history. But "A Mother's Kisses" has ironically been swallowed up by all the great comedy that it helped to make acceptable.

Ek het al Deon Meyer se boeke al gelees maar om een of ander rede nie hierdie een...die eerste een nie. Ek is baie bly ek het nou. Uitstekendr storie, baie aksie en geen 'dull moments' nie. Sal dit vir enigiemand aanbeveel!

'n Boek wat ek nie maklik kon neersit nie. Soms was daar 'n bietjie te veel los punte en moes ek kop hou en maar berus by sommige onrealistiese gebeure. Oor die algemeen was dit lekker opm te lees..

It's heavy on the ideas, such as dismantling an embellished garment and reassembling it for a more perfect, uniquely decorated fit; or the use of patchwork in inventing items fabricated out of plastics or metal. It also emphasizes a variety of techniques, many taking advantage of miracle materials like Aquabond (a water-soluble fabric with one sticky side) and crystal strands, synthetic fibers that fuse together when ironed. Full-color photographs of finished recyclables enhance the half-dozen projects--a cushion, makeup bag, concertina book--giving needleworkers inspiration that will last a literal lifetime. Creative Recycling in Embroidery Val Holmes

I actually returned this book to Amazon - I think that's a first. Although I'm a huge fan of Holmes' and love most innovate needlework books - this one is stale material and there isn't anything new that you don't already have on your shelf, assuming you have purchased other books in the genre. Had I seen it in a book store and leafed through it, I would not have bought it. However, if you don't have any other books that are similar (the Maggie Grey books, or Janet Newton books) then you will probably find it worthwhile.

It isn't bad, it is just not new or original. The presentation and photos are wonderful, as I expect from British needlework books, and the techniques are described well. Ms Holmes has authored a number of embroidery books, and I believe I have them all - if you don't, and don't have other books on this subject, then I would recommend it.

CREATIVE RECYCLING IN EMBROIDERY

This is an excellent book for those who want to create an artistic piece from salvaged fabrics, fibres, paper, plastic or anything that they think might come in useful at a later date. The book is full of ideas and useful hints for almost anything that a Textile Aartist could possibly ask for.

Nothing New

I am a contemporary artist--painter and textile--and ordered the book on a whim.

Much of the work is tiresome, mediocre and lacking anything new that has not already been done. The book has photos of the work with some explanations of construction and found objects used. The use of embroidery is very loosely used in connection to the works. Most of the embroidery was machine and the very little hand work that was done was simplistic and minimal.

Another disappointment goes back to store.
