About the Author

Sara A. Whitcomb is an Assistant Professor in the School Psychology program in the Department of Student Development at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

The late Kenneth W. Merrell (Ph.D.) was Professor of School Psychology at the University of Oregon, where he served as Director of the program and Area Head of the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences.

Don't get the e-book!

It's a good book, but I HIGHLY encourage users NOT to get the e-book. It's so poorly formatted and I'm filled with regret that I didn't just get the hard copy. There are no page numbers, only locations, so it's nearly impossible to figure out where you are in the book or to navigate around to different sections. You have to go back to the table of contents each time you want to go to a new section (there's not even a side bar!). Not user friendly in the slightest.

DO NOT order the kindle version of this book, if you are using it for school. The book does not include page numbers, which makes it impossible if your instructor assigns certain pages.

Garfinkle debunks one of the great myths of the Vietnam era, that the antiwar movement in any way hastened the end of our involvement there. As the author notes, much of the reason for the almost universal acceptance of this view is because we are so used to hearing it, and because on a certain level we want to believe that outraged Americans can and did change the course of history. Garfinkle points to a number of Harris and Gallup polls from the 1960s which clearly demonstrate that if there was anything more hated than the war itself, it was the antiwar movement. He also details how this rage on the part of the "silent majority" put Richard Nixon into office, which gave America four more years of war and another 25,000 dead American soldiers. A wonderful book, rich with detail and original insight.

They seminal work on the Vietnam anti war movement

This is an important book for anyone who wants to try and make sense of the 1960's and understand the Vietnam War. The ultimate lesson of this book is that the Vietnam War anti war movement Captained by the Ahab that was the new left in the 60's did not end that war but in fact prolonged that struggle and caused arguably more needless bloodshed. If you want to learn how to properly and respectfully protest a war in a manner that is honorable even patriotic read this incredibly detailed and well documented book.

A man with the ominous-sounding name of Isaiah Blood once operated one of the largest tool factories of its kind in the country along the Kayaderosseras Creek 150 years ago. The Ballston Scythe, Axe & Tool Works shipped hundreds of thousands of quality hard-edge tools around the world for decades on end.

It can be said that Isaiah Blood is the “forgotten” entrepreneur of Ballston Spa. His scythe and axe works were famous throughout the country, but few documents survive to this day that describe his personal accomplishments and motivations.

One reason Blood’s legacy faded so quickly was the destruction of both of his factories and the extinction of his direct family line. Although his son-in-law continued to operate the business for twenty years after Blood died, both the scythe and axe factories were completely destroyed by fire in 1900 and never rebuilt. This sudden and complete loss was devastating to the hundreds of skilled workers employed there, most of whom were forced to move away. Blood’s own son died at a young age, as did his daughter’s children, so that by the 1920s there were no direct descendants left.

I grew up in Ballston Spa New York and moved away shortly after graduating from high school. I found the book about my hometown history interesting and would recommend the book to anyone interesting in New York history, particularly if you are from B-Spa.

Kindle Edition is Great

The books is informative, but not so dense that a newcomer to the subject is overwhelmed. After years of studying European, North African and Middle Eastern history I thought it would be good to get an understanding of East Asia; this book is easily the best for accomplishing that goal. It is surprisingly accessible.

For those buying the Kindle Edition, though Kindles rarely display maps well, this book was less challenging than most. If the user switches the Kindle display sideways, the maps are actually quite legible.

A History Book Worth Reading

Charles Holcombes’ “A History of East Asia” is a great book.

I will admit that when I read the opening chapter (from a sample copy), I almost decided against purchasing the book. Holcombe states that World War II began in 1937. For those familiar with this event, the date conflicts with virtually every Western history book. Thus, the last thing I wanted to do was buy a history book containing erroneous information. But after speaking with a few Chinese and Korean acquaintances, I was informed that the date is correct from the perspective of East Asian history. What would progress into a world war (World War II) involved Asia before it significantly involved Europe or the U.S. In other words, the book is written from the East Asian perspective, yet through a Westerner’s vantage point. In any case, I’m very glad I purchased the book. It is one of the best history books I’ve read.

The book is well-written. The major events are written in an entertaining style, and the cultural discussions were both informative and interesting. I especially liked the fact that a decent portion of the book was devoted to pre-modern times; most history books on Asia by Western authors focus too much attention on Asia after contact with the West. The book also discusses some of the ancient innovations and early political developments in China (and the East Asian region), and gives some insight (albeit, brief) into why China lagged behind the West after becoming the most advanced empire. Of course, like most history books that tackle a large geographic region over a considerable timespan, some of the details are lost. Nonetheless, I haven’t come across many history books that managed to hold my attention from beginning to end like this book.

It’s important to mention that the book is about East Asia, which the author defines as China, Korea, and Japan. This seems to be the common understanding of East Asia (sometimes called North East Asia) in the West – distinguished from Southeast Asia, South Asia, or Northern Asia. In addition, Holcombe limits East Asia to these three nations because these nations are defined by a common underlying historical culture; Korea and Japan adapted much of their cultural values, attitudes, customs, and early institutions from China. While China certainly influenced other Asian societies, such as Vietnam and Southeast Asia generally, these other nations are not the focus of this book.

In summary, if you are interested in the history of East Asia, this is a good introduction. I highly recommend this book.

Not Really About Asia, Rather China

I obtained this book for a college course some time ago, and I decided to keep it for my own reading pleasure because I thought it was so detailed. It gives detailed information to the founding, imperial, and modern eras of China, Korea and Japan.

The only problems I have is that there is mispronunciation of Korean dynasties. Being one who speaks, reads and writes in Korean myself...I can speak of this from fact. Also that it seems to focus a bit more on China, as I believe the author has most experience with Sino topics.

If you want a basic, in-depth historical account of Northeast Asia...then this is the choice for you.

Beneath all of the fun, author Stephen Davis provides a handy road map of C++ complete with warning signs to help beginners avoid stylistic and conceptual mistakes. The book contains useful pointers for programmers who use Microsoft and Borland C++ compilers and highlights some of the nonstandard features of these compilers. C++ for Dummies is full of apt metaphors that bring some of the more difficult-to-grasp concepts to life.

okie so...

I cant give u a full on report on this product and here is why,

firstly I know no programming languages, I just happen to think hey I like reading the for dummies books and I always wanted to learn a programming language..and this one out of the ones I checked into was pretty cheap used so I thought heeeey why not?

So I go to start reading the intro to the book and it says, If you have learned C and are wanting to learn C++, this book is great for you! If you need a brush up on your C and also want to learn C++, this book is great for you! If you have never learned C or C++, then put this book back on the shelf, and go buy the C for dummies instead....because this is not the book for you.

HAHA, I kid you not! So looks like i need to buy C for dummies first. Unfortunately like I said I don't know any programming languages so I really have no idea on which ones to learn first, but apparently its not C++, HA!

Hey I woulda bought the C for dummies but on amazon it was one of the more expensive books at like 20+. Guess Im gonna have to splurge on random books I dont need but just thought I would read for books, to get this I wanna learn programming languages idea started.

So the book looks ok, I mean I didnt read it all but the content seems pretty decent, I guess what Im suggesting is like the book says, learn C first, then read this book.

Doesn't deserve one star

Spare yourself from the pain that is this book. Being extremely impressed by Dan Gookin's C book, I thought that this book would be comparable. Wrong, it was the worst programming book I've ever read.

Read the prerequisites!

I'm guessing this is something that most of the reviewers who were critical of this book, didn't do before purchasing it. Yes you need to know C for this book and that is clearly stated in the prerequisites. But any book that tries to teach you C++ without prior knowledge of C is only lying to you (It's called C++ not D as in it's an addition onto C). If you try to learn C++ first you will only end up with a VERY superficial understanding of the language, which is something I know from experience. Personally I hate reading, and I'm always looking for shortcuts, but trying to learn C++ before C isn't a shortcut and you'll have to retrace you steps back to the start as soon as you figure that out. One more point, I always find many of the people who say you should not or not have to learn C first are people who did exactly that when they were starting out and are now experienced programmers. A hill never seems as high after you have climbed it.
Now that I have dispelled some of the myths previously presented it's time for the facts about the book...
Getting back on track, if you have a good knowledge of C before reading this book, you will love it. This book is very fast and manages to teach you the basics and then many quite advanced features of the C++ language; such as operator overloading, without getting you confused.
The one bad thing about the book that others have mentioned is that there are very boring and pretty long examples at the end of the first few chapters and if you read them, you will find yourself re-learning things that you already know from previous chapters. Solution: After you have gone through the first example, you should only skim the others.
Summary - Learn C well (Yes, pointers too! -- the best pointer explanation on the net: [...] next get this book, then forever praise the book as it will expand your knowledge into Object-Orientated C++ in about a tenth of the time it took you to learn C. Try and learn C++ first and just like me (and many of my friends) you will waste your time, until the day you finally decide it isn't working and go back and start on C.
For those who need more convincing, read on...
Apart from the logical reasons for learning C first, there is also the fact that C is so much more fun to learn than C++. In C++ everything interesting is already done for you which makes it great for business where you want to build applications fast, but that takes out all the fun. Sort of like how making a pizza from scratch is more fun than pulling it out of the box and sticking it in the microwave. Home made pizza usually tastes a lot better too and it's the same with programming in C (and I'm not exaggerating).
