The Blade Itself (The First Law), by Joe Abercrombie

The first novel in the First Law Trilogy and debut novel from New York Times bestseller, Joe Abercrombie.

Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian -- leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies.

Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it.

Enter the wizard, Bayaz. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glokta a whole lot more difficult.

Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood.

Unpredictable, compelling, wickedly funny, and packed with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is noir fantasy with a real cutting edge.

From Publishers Weekly
British newcomer Abercrombie fills his muddled sword-and-sorcery series opener with black humor and reluctant heroes. Logen Ninefingers, a barbarian on the run from an ex-employer who's now king of the North, finds his loyalties complicated when he switches sides and becomes a valuable source of intel to the beleaguered Union. Glokta, a torture victim turned torturer, gets roped into securing the Union's position against both the invading Northmen and the incompetent Union king and council, and ruthlessly wields his skills in attempts to weed out traitors. Foppish Jezal, a preternaturally excellent swordsman, manages to win the contest to become the Union champion, thanks to a little help from Bayaz, a mage with his own agenda. The workmanlike plot, marred by repetitive writing and an excess of torture and pain, is given over to introducing the mostly unlikable characters, only to send them off on separate paths in preparation for the next volume's adventures. "But some things have to be done. It's better to do them, than to live with the fear of them."
By Peter Carrier
**** SPOILERS ****

Abercrombie offers his take on a familiar fantasy yarn, with subtle distinctions and twists to make it his own. While he introduces us to his intriguing setting, more overt world-building seems to be the province of later volumes. In "The Blade Itself", Abercrombie demonstrates a knack for another staple of great fiction: compelling, relatable characters. They are sometimes archetypes, sometimes novel, but they are never boring. Also, they all come with some kind of delicious twist.

Take Glokta, for example. He started out as a Contest champion who was commissioned as one of the King's Own, then captured in battle during the Union's war with Gurkhul (where he was making a heroic sacrifice of himself so other soldiers could escape) and tortured by the enemy for two years. He returns to the Union but, due to the injuries he sustained during his years as a prisoner, he cannot resume his military post. Instead of giving up and going home to become a burden to his family, he joins the King's Inquisition and becomes a torturer himself. While there are certainly other allegories that could be made for the arrival of a man into middle age, Glokta himself summarizes the sentiment quite succinctly: "What a place. Glokta stifled a smile. It reminds me of myself, in a way. We both were magnificent once, and we both have our best days far behind us."

Would this man need to be an Inquisitor to feel isolated or outcast? Of course not; his physical debilitation already confers him that status. How Abercrombie relates Glokta's distaste for everyone else around him is uncanny. Be it Luthar (whom Glokta might well be jealous of anyway, simply due to Luthar's youth) or his old 'friend' West (a man he resents for living, even though that was exactly what Glokta's 'sacrifice' was intended to win) or the head of his own order (Sult is a very special kind of d*ck and it should come as no surprise the highest-ranked inquisitor would force a crippled man to climb several flights of stairs for information easily disseminated by other means).

This is but an example, a single emotional step in ONE character. Abercrombie presents several similar facets in several different characters. True, not every character is this nuanced or developed (not in this first book, at any rate), but that the author presents this ability so effortlessly is... staggering and humbling.

If the characters were not engaging enough to hold interest, Abercrombie makes some quality observations. A few noteworthy quotes:

"Hard words are for fools and cowards."

"That got him to thinking about his life. It seemed a bitter, pointless sort of life now. No one was any better off because of it. Full of violence and pain, with not much but disappointment and hardship in between."

"It could be worse, believe me. It's when you come out before you went in that you really start to worry."

TLDR: a very enjoyable romp. Quite spellbinding, even with occasionally formulaic elements and presentation. The next part of the series is already on the short list of "must read" books.

Think George RR Martin with a bit more humor and the barest hint of hope
By Josh Mauthe
There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky.

And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.

More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent.

If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

The Anachronism Itself
By Michael
Just to preface this... I'm not a particularly avid fan of the fantasy genre. I picked this up because, having just finished the fifth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, I saw it on a lot of 'recommended if you like' lists... and... well... at $2.99, it was worth giving a shot.

I enjoyed it enough to perhaps pick up the other books in the series at some point, but not enough to recommend. Coming back to the item page to write this review I noticed for the first time Abercrombie has a background in film editing.. this made perfect sense in retrospect because the work has a very cinematic sensibility. The way the action sequences are written feel like notes from a screenplay and a much of the dialogue has a buddy-comedy feel. The wry tone of many of the primary (POV) characters (relative to the bumbling secondary and tertiary characters) along with some informal language and sight-gag tropes ("err," "and so on," a nervous man fussing with his glasses, one of the main characters pulling a hulk-hogan) tended to run roughshod over my ability to suspend disbelief and take the events in the story as they came. It was like having a conversation with someone who uses text message shorthand in their speech. duh-buhl-yoo tee eff.

The story was generally entertaining, though (going back to the cinematic sensibility) this felt like the first act. The players were introduced and the conflict established but it didnt feel like much happened beyond getting various pieces in place. There were a few action sequences, none of which did much to advance the plot. Its is perhaps just enough to keep you reading... but any comparison to George RR Martin's works (or Tolkien's) is unfair. Abercrombie's world just isnt as well developed, complex or immersive.

Review
""Impro ought to be required reading not only for theatre people generally but also for teachers, educators, and students of all kinds and persuassions. Readers of this book are not going to agree with everything in it; but if they are not challenged by it, if they do not ultimately succumb to its wisdom and whimsicality, they are in a very sad state indeed . . . .Johnstone seeks to liberate the imagination, to cultivate in the adult the creative power of the child . . . .Deserves to be widely read and tested in the classroom and rehearsal hall . . .Full of excellent good sense, actual observations and inspired assetions."

Something for Everyone
By Allegra DiNetta
Impro: Improvisation And The Theatre is a surprisingly helpful book by Keith Johnston. After a brief introduction and some autobiographical information, it dives right in to Improv instruction. I say instruction, because Keith Johnstone wrote this book from the point of view of an instructor, but it really can be helpful for students, actors, writers, and people who want to be more creative in general.

Eye-opening book, goes beyond theater
By mbrock
Keith Johnstone has a very interesting worldview. This book is clearly aimed at people who want to either learn about improvisational theater, or even moreso people who want to teach it. There are a few explicit exercises, but the text is mostly prose about the nature of improvisation, and the way that relates to human psychology.

As an example of an interesting psychological insight, Johnstone discusses trance states. He strongly recommends using theatrical masks for improvisation, and his method for using them—though he references many earlier teachers with the same idea—involves using mirrors and skillful encouragement in order to take the student out of their normative self and get them to really experience being something else. But we are in fact always going in and out of trance states, he explains: it's impossible to always be "in control," and attempting that just leads to frustration and anxiety.

Another basic point is that imagination is a kind of natural state of the human mind. At one point he says explicitly that imagination is the "true self," which is if nothing else a fascinating hypothesis. His take on school education recalls other writers, especially John Holt, whom he cites several times: basically, modern education tends to discourage spontaneity and imagination.

Finally, his structural way of seeing theater, comedy, and human interaction in general, involves "status games," which makes a lot of sense. For example, he loves Beckett's way of playing with master-servant dynamics, one-upping, etc. He describes a method of teaching theater that involves getting people to understand their own habits of "status posturing," in order to assume other positions and act naturally. He says that long spontaneous improvisation sessions can grow out of just a simple configuration of status, and gives examples of such games.

Johnstone's outlook reminds me of life's strange beauty. Life is indeed much like improvisational theater, and it's great to learn from the insights of someone whose life work involves taking this seriously.

Meaningful stuff, makes you think.
By A.K.
This was the first improv book that I ever read, and in retrospect I kind of wish I'd read something like Charna Halpern's TRUTH IN COMEDY or Mick Napier's IMPROVISE first. Those books will give you a better introduction to what most of us know of as group improvisation - the "Whose Line is it anyway" sort of thing. They'll give you a better framework to work with.

Keith Johnstone's book, on the other hand, is kind of like a complete rethinking of the Improv framework ... he writes about things I haven't read about anywhere else. And it really made me think about things in a different way.

First of all, I have to admit that the first couple of sections are pretty dry. I had to struggle to get through the section on "Status" ... I was thinking to myself, why did people give this BORING book a good review?? ... I did consider that maybe it's because the man is British (I think), and so the style of writing and the type of humor is a little different than I'm used to.

However, when he gets around to talking about the story/narrative, suddenly there is a flash of brilliance and it all started to make sense ... basically he talks about just letting GO of the things that are inhibiting us, how to stop listening to the voice that is telling us NO all the time ... and, I don't know, there's just something very profound in the way that he discusses it - little insights here and there that are just, for lack of a better word, very MEANINGUL.

For example, he says, of parents and teachers who scold their children, to keep their undesirable 'creativeness' under wraps: "... when these children grow up, and perhaps crack up, then they'll find themselves in therapy groups where they'll be encouraged to say all the things that the teacher would have forbidden during school." SO TRUE. This is what all the group therapies in Psych hospitals do - try to bring back the creativeness of the child. Why do we limit it in the first place??

Basically he stresses that EVERYONE has "weird" thoughts and an "artistic" nature that many of us have learned to say NO to, because they are forbidden or at least not encouraged. He says, "In one moment I knew that the valuing of men by their intelligence is crazy, that the peasants watching the night sky might feel more than I feel, that the man who dances might be superior to myself - word-bound and unable to dance. From then on I noticed how warped many people of great intelligence are, and I began to value people for their actions, rather than their thoughts."

And that's not EVEN getting into the last chapter, on MASKS - at first I was thinking, "OK, this is weird, why is there a huge chapter on MASKS in a book about IMPROV"? But the things he describes there are perhaps the most amazing, and disturbing, of the whole book. It almost makes me fear what I would "do" if I were to follow his instructions and suggestions ... but it's an excited sort of 'fear' - actually I wish I had readier access to instructors who are comfortable in these methods ... well, I can't really describe it much better than that.

Review

“Technoculture: The Key Concepts argues forcefully that contemporary culture, self, and identity are profoundly interwoven with technology: we are ‘techno-bodies' inhabiting ‘techno-spaces.' The book combines rich empirical examples with an exciting range of social theory, encompassing the Frankfurt School, Debord, Baudrillard, and Haraway. Not only is this a crystal clear introduction to the cultural studies and social theory of technology, but researchers in the field will find many new theoretical connections and novel insights.” ―Charles Thorpe, University of California at San Diego

“A very well written and engrossing intervention into Science and Technology studies that can also serve as an introduction to the field for higher level undergraduate and graduate students and for anyone truly interested in the role of science and technology in human society today.” ―Chris Hables Gray, The Union Institute and University

Love this book, but my limited intellect can only handle about 5 pages at a time : )
By T. Petrie
Succinct. Kinda textbook-y, which in fact, I'm pretty sure it is. Pop references in the books will no doubt get stale with time, but the concepts are right on and an enjoyable read.

Spurred into action by the bloody massacre of her people, Audra, a young Lithuanian witch, embarks upon enacting a vendetta against the brutal knights of the Teutonic Order. Her actions set in motion a deadly cycle of violence that expands through the centuries to become a hidden war of death, destruction, and deceit. The shadow war spreads from medieval Europe through twentieth century Nazi occupied Poland and then across the Atlantic to present day South Carolina where an unwitting college librarian, Anna, is ensnared in the conspiracy.
Anna’s life is changed forever when she steps out her door on a balmy spring morning and is swept into a desperate race against time to find the dangerous secrets behind the actions of the bizarre death cult that mercilessly and inexplicably hunts her through the steamy dark of the Low Country night. With the help of a mysterious stranger she unravels the clues that lead her from the black water swamps of South Carolina to the perilous medieval European centers of commerce, power and heresy. With only her wits, and the help of a guide that she may not be able to trust, Anna must confront the poisonous wrath of Giltine’s daughters, an ancient coven bent on vengeance. To her horror, Anna will find that salvation means discovering her own link to a thousand year old genocide. As she works against the clock to save herself Anna must uncover the long buried consequences of the murderous crusades of the Teutonic Order and the fatal events that they have set in motion.

Witches, Knights.....and more
By Deborah W. Lesley
This is another novel written in the popular style of today where you have to jump between time periods and places. Some people might want to start at the beginning and write down the characters for each period in order to keep them straight and to make the connections.

Since I live in NC, I enjoyed the Carolina connections.....could actually picture the scenes which is always fun to do.

Story is interesting as it was a story line not found in other things I have read. I find myself wondering if the two main groups are based on real groups from history. You do have to keep straight the connections between the witches, knights, modern and WWII Germany, and present day US. They are connected but I felt the end of the story wrapped quickly.

If I am correct, the author is or has been and English teacher so a few errors surprised me.....wrong "to,too, two" used or a plural made with apostrophe s........just things I did not expect. But these could have been with editors changing things...who knows?

New guy in town on the good fiction side!
By Patricia Northey
Interesting characters; plot moves along with surprises along the way. Did not have a dead zone that causes me to lose interest. I am looking forward to the next book. Hope this stays in the mix as an ongoing story. Great read for a first novel.

Another excellent book on Digi-architecture
By Joongwon Lee
Materials and effects are age-old themes of architecture.
Tectonics, joinery, and permanence are the key themes that
resurface over and over again in the theory and practice of
architecture. Now the grounds are fast shifting due to awesome
new tools available for architects.

Digital parametric design and manufacturing process has freed
"formal imagination" and "material imagination".
In this volume, use of materials and their aftermath
effects are pushed to edge. Using both emergent materials
and innovative application of conventional materials,
desired dynamic and adaptive formal/surface/spatial
effects are achieved.

Beginning with introductory essay by Prof. Kolarevic and
Prof. Klinger, the book introduces case studies of multiple
architects, researchers, and vendors. Key built projects by
Herzog de Meuron, SHoP, Barkow Leibinger, SANAA, OMA, etc
focus on the actual materiality and fabrication aspect.
Experimental projects are as much provoking, if not more,
as built projects.

This is a key publication (along with "Architecture in the
Digital Age: Design and Manufacturing", edited by Prof. Kolarevic)
for those who seek cutting-edge architectural technology,
innovative material application, and pioneering spatial effect-making.

A good approach to increase your rating !
By A Customer
First of all I would most recomend this book for average chess players and players who are starting to learn chess, but who has not access to any experienced chess player to guide them through the exciting world of chess. A commom wisdom within chess is that when you have lost a game, you should analyse your game and try to find out what went wrong. Then you should try to learn from your experience. This is the best way to improve your game. This is also the idea behind this book, Larry Evans a GM from the US, has selected from a wide variety of different players, from amateurs to world-class players like Kasparov, Karpov, Anand and Fischer. Each page within this book gives examples of a position and the reader is given the task to pick between two moves, one which is right and one move which has actually occured during a game which is wrong. Reading through this book -I used a chess board in front of me , altough i must admit it was a bit boring to setup all the postions - was a fascinating journey to a lot of interesting positons. I am absolutely sure that I become a much better chess player by working through this book, some situations were familiar from my own games and I learnt what I did wrong, the book thought me a lot about opening, midddle game(especially) and when it comes to end game there is a lot of entertainment from examples from different positions. What I didn't like about the book was that Evans commentary sometimes were with a humiliating tone for some players involved. The fact is that we all make mistakes -as this book clearly demonstrates- but there should be no reason to be upset about it. Chess should after all be a friendly game which is fun. Right now I have started to repeat the book , this time without a board in front of me;).

Purpose is Enjoyment not Improvement
By Eugene Milener
I reject the oft implied notion that each chess book should be judged by how many Elo points you gain as a direct result of reading the book. Reading a chess book rarely increases one's Elo rating. In this regard most chess books are the same.

Yet chess books differ greatly in how enjoyable they are to read. This book by Larry Evans is more enjoyable than is the average chess book. I am glad I own this book.

The enjoyable-ness of this book comes in part from the ready access it gives to the two move choices presented to the reader. The two moves to choose from are presented immediately under the diagram. The reader's task is to determine which move is a big blunder. The explanation of both moves is presented in paragraph format at the bottom of the same page.

This avoids the under-criticized tedious hassle of having to flip thru pages in the back of the book. This is a handy book to keep by your throne at home.

However, it would have been better for the explanatory paragraphs to have been printed two pages ahead. That would have kept them nearby, and yet helped you avoid accidently reading the answer.

Evans' prose is usually pleasant to read, especially when he discusses diagrams from his own games (true feelings, less need for cliche as when discussing games he was not involved in).

My only criticizm of this book is that Evans rarely attempts any educationalor summary explanation beyond giving variations. The book is also a little pricey considering how few puzzles are in it.

By A Customer
I like this book. Despite the other reviewers' negativity, I have found it helpful. I am relatively new to chess, I know the basic rules and enjoy playing, but I haven't played any tournaments or been rated. This book is helping me to think out the positions and analyze them more seriously than I did before. If you are (relatively) new to chess, this is a good book. If you are an advanced player, this is not the one for you.

FORSAKEN:
Nora Colburn was perfectly content in life. A junior in high school, she had good friends, a great family, and did well in school. Nothing particularly exciting ever happened where she lived, and everything was stable.

But that all drastically changes when a new student arrives at Nora's school. Wild rumors swirl about his past, and Nora becomes determined to find out the truth.

As she gets to know the mysterious student, he shares with her an ancient secret... one that may yet put both of them in grave danger.

And for the first time in her life, Nora is exposed to a completely unfamiliar world. She is swept away on an exhilarating journey that takes her to a place where romance and great destiny may yet await... and where supernatural powers run wild.

REVELATIONS:Nora has survived the dark caves, and emerged with Hunter by her side. But her escape is quickly tainted as she realizes the biggest danger still lies ahead...

She has been transformed, and powers she has never known begin to manifest themselves within her body. As she struggles to gain control, how long will she be able to restrain herself - and her new bloodlust - from taking over?

As she journeys onward, doubts begin to creep into her mind. Doubts about leaving home, about the decisions she's made. But with the Vassiz still behind her, there is no turning back, now.

And she has questions that need to be answered. Just who are the elders, and why have they taken such a keen interest in her? As she starts the unravel the cloak that shrouds their existence, she begins to suspect that she may have stumbled into something much larger than herself... and starts to understand her destiny for the first time.

RELENTLESS:There is a prophecy that speaks of a time of great turmoil, a time when the rule of power will be overturned by the hammer of fate. That time has come, and one girl stands in the middle of it all...

Nora has been reunited with Hunter, and together they must face the elders. But this time, they have the angels on their side. It is a precious advantage, but only if used properly...

She has learned of the prophecy of her fate, and learned of her destiny. But while others are certain, she is less sure. And as she moves forward, she learns that absolutely nothing can ever be guaranteed.
FORETOLD:In the epic fourth book of The Forsaken Saga, Nora comes face to face with the elders for the first time. With Hunter and the angels at her side, she will try to do that which no one has done: destroy the elders, and break their terrible reign of power.

But it will not be easy. The elders have held on to their posts since the first memories of the Vassiz. Will prophecy be enough to guide Nora against them?

If she succeeds, the world as she knows it will change forever. But if she does not, everyone she knows will suffer a terrible fate. She is determined, but there are hidden secrets that may yet prevent her from reaching her goals...

A decent read
By DoubleA
At first I had to really struggle to make it through the first book, the second got much better and the third was not bad. I did have to get over the name change of the main character after two books, Gabriel went to Gabrielle although he was still a "he", a lot of typos and spelling errors, however looking past all that, it was not a bad trilogy.

... still think that this author is one of my favorite: ) Kids
By Amazon Customer
I said it before and I sure still think that this author is one of my favorite :) Kids, read this! Very light and entertaining story. Not boring and not tragic. Just plain fantasy, you go and flow with it without pretense of it being realistic.
P.S. Everyone with young teens will enjoy this reading together, especially if you share your Kindle with them as I DO :#

Seriously?
By Amy McK
At first it's pretty decent. I only started reading it because I clicked on it in my library by accident. I liked what I saw so I kept going. The dream world was great, I enjoyed it too. And then Nora suddenly just did everything Hunter told her to without any thought to her family. I let it slide until the end of book one. Her reasoning to convert made sense, but then the solution was right there immediately. Wholly anticlimactic and foreshadowing of books to come.
Book two became more annoying with the inner dialogue. I began to skim after it became easy for a new born vampire to resist human blood after getting a taste for the first time. At this point I didn't care about the folklore of the vampires. It became a big deal that she hadn't fed, but it was not explained why they just wouldn't feed her. Regardless, there was a fight, they split up, though after revealing why I think it was kind of lame for the subterfuge. Nora becomes very annoying in her repetitive questions, whining, and inner dialogue. In a nut shell Nora suddenly is a bad ass martial artist gymnast, that is extremely smart in solving convoluted riddles. When it came to the archive and the creature everything was predictable.
There is a huge gap from the ending of book 2 to book 3. The author leaves out a CRUCIAL encounter with angels and explanations of why the elders must be stopped. I am being forced to rely on what Nora says but I have such a low opinion of her by this time that I don't trust what she thinks. Don't even get me started on the bear. After the third or fourth reference to the angels, me becoming increasingly distracted by ANYTHING going on around me, and wishing this book was over that I threw in the towel.
