About the Author

Michael Neenan is Associate Director of the Centre for Stress Management and Centre for Coaching, Blackheath, and a BABCP accredited cognitive behavioural therapist. He has written and edited over 20 books.

Windy Dryden is Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London and is an international authority on rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT). He has worked in psychotherapy for over 30 years and is the author and editor of over 195 books.

No nonsense, highly useful

The authors have an impeccable style of writing, and I have personally trained with Windy. The book is written in a very crisp, concrete and helpful style, and the content is very helpful to help yourself, or if you are a trainer delivering workshops on these topics. A superb compilation of the specific life skills that are necessary for effective living.
As a reader, as a mental health professional and trainer myself, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Gr 7 Up-The "Rider" slips from the body of a high school senior and observes the aftermath of his attempted suicide in the first pages of this suspenseful paranormal novel. Readers have to wait to find out what happened to Dan as the book travels backward in time, beginning on the day he tried to take his own life. The ghostlike Rider lives with Dan through one day only to be thrust back at day's end to the previous day. The Rider is mystified by his current existence and disgusted by the teen to whom he is bound. He becomes increasingly convinced that he must save someone Dan has hurt, and, as time creeps toward that event, the Rider exercises more and more influence to change the outcome of what he has seen. References and parallels to Alice in Wonderland are numerous and apt as the themes of self-perception, identity, and recognizing the consequences of action and inaction emerge. It is ambitious to tell a story backwards, with a nameless narrator who doesn't understand his own existence, or know anything about Dan's history. This reverse plotting sometimes causes the pace to lag, and the disoriented and distanced narrator makes knowing and caring about the characters difficult. The action and emotion accelerate toward the end of the book, however, and the conclusion is at once thought-provoking and satisfying. Intriguing and Insightful- great book for club discussions

I read this book because my son took his life at the age of 19 and when I heard that the author had taken another approach to writing about suicide I was curious. The book kept me on edge. I was intrigued by the way the author used traveling back in time as the rider observes the happenings of Dan and struggles with what his role is. I found the book very insightful as it gave some ideas worth considering about why some people end their lives by suicide. At a time when teen suicide rates are high, this book can be a means to having some discussion about why that is and how we can make some changes to prevent suicide as a society.

Thought provoking

This book doesn't shy away from the anger, the mistakes, the misunderstandings, the emotional growing pains of being a teen. Nor does it trample the presence of possibility and hope. Mitchell handles the difficult subject of suicide with honesty, grace and the requisite amount of anger. Instead of dwelling on the aftermath, it focuses on the before, the many small moments in a teen's life that can become all encompassing. Told in reverse, the reader follows events as they happen before understanding the underlying reason why. This is an intriguing, thought provoking read for parents and teens.

The efficient markets hypothesis has been the central proposition in finance for nearly thirty years. It states that securities prices in financial markets must equal fundamental values, either because all investors are rational or because arbitrage eliminates pricing anomalies.

This book describes an alternative approach to the study of financial markets: behavioral finance. This approach starts with an observation that the assumptions of investor rationality and perfect arbitrage are overwhelmingly contradicted by both psychological and institutional evidence. In actual financial markets, less than fully rational investors trade against arbitrageurs whose resources are limited by risk aversion, short horizons, and agency problems. The book presents and empirically
evaluates models of such inefficient markets.

Behavioral finance models both explain the available financial data better than does the efficient markets hypothesis and generate new empirical predictions. These models can account for such anomalies as the superior performance of value stocks, the closed end fund puzzle, the high returns on stocks included in market indices, the persistence of stock price bubbles, and even the collapse of several well-known hedge funds in 1998. By summarizing and expanding the research in behavioral finance,
the book builds a new theoretical and empirical foundation for the economic analysis of real-world markets.

Necessary Book for Finance

The material in this book is necessary for anyone who is responsible for managing money or involved with a business entity doing trading in financial markets. Increasingly this is "everyone."
The good news is that the conclusions and punchlines are presented clearly and simply. A person who does not want to follow the math (there is a lot of it) can skip to the arguments and conclusions and get an enormous amount of valuable information. The bad news is that little effort has been expended to make the math attractive. A person wishing to slog through the math will have to be prepared to sit down with pencil & paper & patience. Some editing by someone who cared would have made this book much more attractive to the average student. Martin Baxter & Andrew Rennie's "Financial Calculus" gives a good example of how this can be done.

Best introductory book on behavioral finance

As has been admitted by even the staunchest former proponents of financial economics (such as Burton Malkiel), the multi-decades old dominant intellectual field in academic finance has piled up against itself persistent anomalous data. Thus, it is no surprise, as the science of economics advanced, that a new intellectual field would develop to challenge and replace the old. Behavioral finance, which relaxes some of the key assumptions in financial economics, utilizes survey data, and integrates knowledge from psychology to better understand financial markets, is that new intellectual field.

Although still controversial, young economists and financial professionals should become versed in this new field as early as possible: 1) because there is huge room for new research where creative economists can flex their muscle and 2) financial professionals that drop the old adherence to financial economics will have an edge over those that don't. Andrei Shleifer's work is the best introductory work on behavioral finance that I've come across, and I thus strongly recommend it to those who want a quick and easy to understand introduction to this field which is the wave of the future of academic finance (well, I hope).

Chapter 1 lays out the two pillars to his argument: a theory of investor sentiment, and limits to arbitrage. Both are needed, as without systematic deviations from rationality, irrational decisions cancel each other out, making them somewhat uninteresting (excepting increasing volume); without limits to arbitrage such irrational deviations from `true value' are instantly poached by savvy rational investors.
The first model shows that if arbitrage is limited and noise traders have systematic biases, prices can deviate from fundamental value (DeLong et al, 1990a). That is, Shell can deviate from its fundamental value because no one has enough money and time to put the price into equilibrium, and investor sentiment varies between markets and over time. This model also has the interesting implication that less informed investors might earn a higher rate of return on their total portfolios because they irrationally believe they have a more favorable risk-return opportunity and hence invest in securities with a higher return. In effect, their stupidity effectively diminishes their risk aversion, and in the long run allows a lucky few of them to reap the financial rewards that would accrue to the less risk averse (one could call it the `Forrest Gump' effect). As opposed to speculation weeding out the irrational traders and making only the best opinions matter, the irrational can dominate.
The closed fund puzzle is presented in chapter three and highlights some of the problems of this approach (Lee, Thaler and Shleifer, 1991). The issue to be explained is why 1) funds are issued at premiums to net asset value (overpriced) and 2) funds eventually trade at discount to net asset value (underpriced). While the underpricing is addressed through the mechanism outlined in the first model (limited arbitrage and noise traders), the overpricing effect is addressed by assuming that `noise traders' buy up the initial issuance-not very subtle. Clearly if noise traders can be foisted into overpaying or underpaying within models by assumption, it is hard to avoid the inference that this approach can explain everything and thus nothing.
Of course on occasion EMH proponents also try to explain seemingly everything, where exceptions are assumed order-statistics until they are granted statistical significance, at which time they are instantly seen as an efficient proxy of unmeasured risk (e.g., the value and size effect). Yet explanatory greediness is clearly more of a problem to the inefficient markets camp. For example, in addition to the above example, investor sentiment is used to explain both the equity-premium puzzle (i.e., why stock prices are too low on average) and why recent p/e multiples are too high (page 180): if the equity-premium is a `puzzle' it is difficult to also say that our currently historically high p/e multiple is irrational, but if the p/e ratio `should' be lower (around 15) then the equity premium is not a puzzle.
In chapter 4 a nice approach is taken towards professional arbitrage (Shleifer and Vishny, 1997). By modeling it as a principal agent problem, this model captures some relevant issues usually addressed by the Industrial Organization literature. Clearly there is relevance to modeling the situation where hedge fund managers have uncertain skill and investors have to evaluate them. The failure of famed hedge fund LTCM in 1998 was defended, like almost all bankruptcies, as a failure of investor's patience--outsiders are always much quicker at pulling the plug than insiders would prefer. Modeling, in this case, a liquidity constraint, is a highly relevant issue that seems well suited for asymmetric information and principal-agent modeling.
Chapter 5 introduces the model of investor sentiment, that is, why we should expect noise traders to vary systematically in their buy or sell orders (Barberis, Shleifer, and Vishny, 1998). It derives a straightforward and testable hypothesis based on Bayesian updating of a regime-switching model. For earnings or other surprises that continue a trend, overreaction is predicted, for surprises that counter a trend, underreaction is predicted.
In chapter 6, we see the DeLong, Shleifer, Summers, and Waldeman series on noise traders and positive feedback loops (DSSW, 1990b). This sort of model bothers me because it is a bit disingenuous. It puts superficial rigor onto to the simple idea that "given constraints on arbitrage, irrational trend-following investors can make it rational to follow trends, and thus rational traders can be destabilizing." It is not a compelling model because the results are not derived inevitably and subtly from general assumptions and a friction, but instead from assumptions which guarantee the result (e.g., trend-following noise traders and limited arbitrage). Is it at all helpful to take a straightforward idea that can be clearly expressed in a sentence and model this with contrived algebra? Personally I do not think so, though the realist in me understands that without a model to point to, the idea would not be taken as seriously as it has.
It is stressed throughout the book that risky arbitrage makes taking advantage of pervasive irrationality difficult. Yet if irrationality is a systemic and pervasive phenomenon, then there exist hundreds of scenarios like mispriced Shell, overvalued Amazon, undepriced closed funds, overvalued currencies, overvalued IPOs, etc. Surely over several years these positions, somewhat independent, should make significant abnormal risk-adjusted returns. As is more probable, there are not hundreds of such situations, but perhaps a handful, and with the rational markets assumption ignored hundreds more opportunities appear to exist but actually do not (e.g., the small firm effect). Be sure to monitor Thaler's funds (UBRLX and UBVLX) and Sheifer's fund (LSVEX).

Useful, but could be better

I have experience with a ZedBoard and ISE/Planahead for Zynq development. I picked up a MicroZed and this book and hoped it would help me make the transition from ISE to Vivado quickly. It is helping, but not quickly.

In general, it is a useful book (I am still working through it), but there are a few issues:
1) The book has no page numbers, but has a table of contents referencing page numbers. However, there are a lot of numbered figures, so the table of figures at the front of the book can be used to infer the page numbers.
2) It was written using Vivado 2013.2. I am using a later Vivado and its flow occasionally deviates from the book. I was able to wade through the differences, but it was slow going.
3) Some of the figures are critical but unreadable. For example, Figure 29 depicts a modification to the DDR address space in the FSBL loader script, but it is illegible. The supporting text doesn't say what the DDR address address/size values are, but refers to the figure. I went to the online blog from which this book was made, and the same illegible figure is used there. I was able to find the correct values by looking at the linker script of the application created in an earlier step (ps7_ddr_0_S_AXI_BASEADDR, 0x100000,0x3FF00000)
4) Steps to create the boot image were glossed over. It wasn't clear that "datafile" was the necessary partition type for both the FPGA bit file and the standalone C application.

I'm sure I will have a longer list of nitpicks like this, but I am still grateful for the book, especially the later sections that cover topics new to me.

The idea of surrounding a hard wired CPU core with fpga fabtic is not new. Both xilinx and altera have had product ifferings with linux support for years. Getti g a design off the ground was at best challenging. The need to have both fpga confug and Cpu software made getting that furst "hello workd". Up involved many late nights, missed deadlines and loss of hair. I know. I did it the hard way in several designs
The zynq SOC. took this embedded CPU and fpga fabric to a new level, including two ARM9 CPU. Zylinx also included all the usual periphals we expect on a SOC. Including. Macs, ddr controllers, iic and so on. Just to complicate things more they dumped the old ISE/EDK tool chain and replaced it with a tightly integrated all in one tool called Vivado. The Eclipse ased SDK remains pretty much unchanged. All that is to show the scale of the paradigm change in embedded SOC/FPGA. development. a huge amount to take on board for both experienced and new developers. Daunting, to put it mildly.

The uzed chronicles guide us gently and thoroughly through an apprenticeship in. all these new concepts with lots of examples and pithy explanations. They avoid all the garbage and witty remarks of so many "for dummies" books but never get confusing ot obscure.
Xilinx documentation tends to assume the reader has some telepathic ability or connection with the concepts. They are OK and entirely necessary but the uzed chronicles are a nicely written guide book that makes the perfect complement to the official docs.
Despite many years experience in the cpu/fpga. Design world i would say these books aved me a year on getting up to speed on Xilinx's new direction. In todays world of high pressure design cycles that year simply woukd have got any commercial project canned. As it is just a few weeks following these texts will bring you right up to speed

Highly recommended. Essential reading in fact.

I had been using my OMD-EM5 for a half a year before this book became available. I was really looking forward to it, hoping that it will help me understand better and use more optimally this fantastic camera. The book failed my expectations completely.

Basically, this book amounts to a re-written instruction manual. Yes, it is in a bigger print than the Olympus manual and admittedly somewhat clearer. But there is nothing more than this. The remainder of the book is very generic information that seems like recycled from the author's books on other cameras (just with "OM-D" globally inserted in the spots marked with "[INSERT CAMERA NAME HERE]"). I was hoping to get more expert insights on the use of this particular camera, advice on advanced options, interpretations - such as rationale why and when to choose specific parameters for certain less obvious settings. I had anticipated expert recommendations on different ways to expand the system, e.g., pros and cons of using legacy lenses with this particular camera, hints on useful customization setups (like the Guide to OMD-EM5 on DPReview provides), etc. Nothing like that - the book is painfully neutral, i.e., washed out of opinions (except for a recommendation of a ridiculously priced camera strap that reads like a paid advertisement). There are also factual errors - several times the book mentions a "built in flash" (looks like a poor copy editing of the generic template for a book on any camera). Overall, I do not recommend that book. Much more valuable information can be found on the web (e.g., Guide to OMD-EM5 on DPReview).

A Helpful Replacement and Suppliment for the OMD User Manual

I bought this book at the same time I purchased Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. The book is helpful and well illustrated with large very easy to view diagrams, images and illustrations. The text is easy to read and understand and has helped me into using this very complex camera. The book itself is four times larger than the OEM manual, is as heavy as the camera, at 1 8 lbs and is beautifully printed on heavy weight glossy stock. My book seems well bound and no pages have come loose as some people reported. This binding looks very sturdy and should hold up as well as my other well bound books.

Some reviewers have stated that this book is no better than the Olympus manual. Not true! The supplied Olympus printed user manual is almost impossible to read, with very small print, no detail, and just enough to get you started. The full user manual is on the Olympus setup disk but I won't really need to spend much time reading it because of this book. The full user manual will be a handy reference when placed on my Tablet for travel. The book itself is probably too heavy to travel with but that's why the full user manuals are on disk. It would be nice if Olympus did make a small full user manual for the camera bag but few companies do that anymore.

The very best place to get started for your first settings on the camera is to read the wonderful Dpreview article on how to setup the camera for optimum first use. It's several pages long but will save you hours of trying to figure out the best settings see [...] This book itself explains settings but does not necessarily recommend the most useful settings that the dpreview article shows how to to get in just a few pages. It's most useful for a great start and even makes this book more understandable and useful.

The Olympus OMD camera is my first Olympus model and it is quite a shock to adjust to the many differences in menus compared to the Canon and Panasonic lineup. I haven't read a lot of the book yet, but most users will only need to read the sections that will be helpful to them along with the full user manual on the Setup disk.

If you are contemplating purchasing the Olympus OM-D E-M5 or have already purchased one, this book will help you get the most from your camera. If you are not sure you want to buy the camera, this book could help you decide and be a great help once you do decide to purchase it. BTW: I think the camera is quite special especially if you are a professional or an advanced amateur. It will be a challenge for the enthusiast but not impossible. The camera will frustrate the novice photographer. However the camera is well worth the time and investment. I was disappointed that the kindle version of this book was so expensive and much more than the printed version. I don't understand that but if it was available at a reasonable price, i would have preferred the kindle version for the portability.

Update: I was very pleased to discover that if you purchase the book from Amazon you are eligible to buy the Kindle version at a later time for the reduced price of $2.99 instead of the regular kindle retail. I really enjoy the kindle versions since I can carry around both the PDF manual and this very helpful book for addition explanation. I think the kindle HDX is perfect for both PDF books and the Kindle book. The Kindle version works well on all Kindles and on your computer.

David Busch OMD E-5 User Guide

Unfortunately this book leaves a lot to be desired for the price paid. Just a wee bit more informative than the user guide which I had to print off the Internet when I first bought the camera a year ago. Save your money, print the user guide off the internet and you will get about the same results. Very disappointed in the book, however highly pleased with the camera and with the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 lens purchased to accompany it. Again, buy the Camera, buy the lens, forget the book.

About the Author
David C. Van Aken is a Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. Dr Van Aken is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Missouri and Illinois. He is the author of more than 70 technical articles. He joined the UMR faculty in 1993 after having taught at the University of Michigan for seven years. David has been the recipient of 12 awards for teaching excellence, 4 Missouri S&T faculty excellence awards and one Missouri S&T Alumni Association outstanding advising award. In 2006 Dr Van Aken was designated a Dean's Teaching Scholar. David began his engineering career in 1978 at Caterpillar, Inc. as a materials engineer and then returned in 1982 to the University of Illinois for his Ph.D. graduate studies. Dr Van Aken is the recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. Van Aken's research interests include the physical metallurgy of ferrous alloys, experimental and theoretical aspects of phase transformations and the mechanical behavior of structural materials.

William Hosford is a Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering at University of Michigan. He is the author of more than 80 technical articles and a number of books including the leading selling Metal Forming: Mechanics and Metallurgy, 3rd edition (with R. M. Caddell) (Cambridge, 2007); Materials Science; An Intermediate Text (Cambridge, 2006); Mechanical Behavior of Materials (Cambridge, 2005); Mechanics of Crystals and Textured Polycrystals (Oxford University Press 1993); Mechanical Metallurgy (CRC Press 2005) and Materials for Engineers (Cambridge, 2008), an undergraduate textbook. Professor Hosford's research interests include explorations into the quantitative relationship between anisotropic yielding behavior and crystallographic texture, sheet metal forming and the dependence of sheet formability on plastic anisotropy and the formation of deformation textures in bcc metals, as well as the spheroidization of medium carbon steels.
