The book describes its key concepts (including identifying triggers of anger, taking responsibility for mistakes, identifying healthy ways to avoid losing control, and discerning provocation), and key activities (including stating feelings, learning steps to control anger and exploring the consequences of choices). Each session includes objectives for that particular lesson, a list of supplies needed for its activities, a description of tasks to do before the lesson, background notes to the leader, a warm-up activity at the start, an explanation of the various learning activities, and a closing activity.

Excellent resource for psychologists and counselors

This book provides an excellent framework for creating groups to work with students with impulse control and anger issues. The lessons are easy to use and described in great detail. I also liked that it is suitable for youth up to age 11 or 12.

Ok. Could be better though.

These are ok, but not as good as I expected. The drawings and photos on the cards come out of Dissection of The Dog (Evans/Delahunta), Miller's Anatomy of the Dog, and Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy (Dyce). Each card has several anatomical features numbered, with the answers on the back. The cards are full-color, and the printing is good. 80% or so are based on canine anatomy; the other 20% are horse, bird, cat, pig, cow.

Where I feel these flashcards fall short:

1) Because there are several items labelled on each card, once you look at the back, you see the rest of the answers. I expected only one item per card so I could use them as true flashcards. The way these are setup, they are no better than using the pages out of the textbook to quiz yourself.

2) The durability of the cards is poor. They are on lighter stock than I would have expected, and they are not coated. As a result, the corners bend very easily.

3) The box they come in is slightly too small to hold all of them. As a result, the box corner seams were split on arrival. The undersized box also makes it a very tight fit to get the cards in and out easily.

Overall:

These could have been a good tool, but it doesn't seem like much thought went in to putting them together. If you already have Dissection of the Dog or Anatomy of the Dog, I wouldn't recommend getting these cards.

Great For Vets and Vet Techs

These flash cards really helped me memorize the anatomy of common animal species such as the cat, dog, horse, and pig. I especially needed help on the farm animals as I am not going into large animal practice so I needed more help to prepare for the large animal tests. Highly recommend.

Fantastic Study Tool!

I am a first year veterinary student and I will admit that anatomy is not one of my strong suits. Especially since this is my first time learning all new species! I love these cards. I am a visual learner so reading about anatomy doesn't really help me much, I need to be able to see it. I have tried reading Duke's but that hasn't really helped me very much. I bought these and have been using them as my primary source to study anatomy. The box comes with all different species (equine, dog, cat, pig, cow) no birds though. The cards are also organized into body area like thorax, pelvic limb, and so on. The cards also make them easier to take on the go, you can just take the section and species that you are focusing on put them in your bag and pull them out when you have a few extra minutes between classes.

Despite having gone to a reputable medical school, CV physiology was taught to me as a series of overly-detailed lectures that made it hard to construct the forest from the proverbial trees. Since then, now a resident in Internal Medicine, and having been inspired to go into the field of Critical Care, I knew that I couldn't let this fractured knowledge-base continue for much longer. I had come across the author's website during med school (cvphysiology.com) and recently revisited it. I then bought this book and read it cover-to-cover. Out of the many reasons to praise his work, I think my vote goes to his ability to explain concepts WITHOUT simplifying them. Although paradoxical-sounding, this separates his book out from the rest of the sea of possible purchases. It is easy to make concepts understandable but so simplified that they are literally not clinically useful (e.g., the Made Ridiculously Simple series). On the other hand, probably more common, there are books which lose sight of the fact that the reader is learning, not reviewing what is already known. CV Physiology Concepts finds the balance, and in the end, is clinically very applicable.

To Dr. Klabunde, thank you for your authorship of such a useful tool for med students, residents, and seasoned physicians, to better grasp the important aspects of CV physiology. Certainly, I will be spreading the word about your book to my colleagues.

BEST cardio book I've used

Amazing book... Currently an MS2 at a US accredited MD school, and during MS1 cardio physio it really helped-- it thoroughly explains things well and has these amazing flow charts throughout the book to easily learn major concepts. I ended up redrawing a lot of the diagrams into my notes. I highly recommend the related website as well; it has great animations. I have tutored for two years now and I am constantly recommending this book and the website. Now, during MS2, I am even using it for some review. Very handy, and pretty cheap as far as books go, so I very much recommend it.

Amazing CV physiology textbook I have ever read. This is so nicely summarized, reasonably up-to-date, and yet without excess.
Easy to read, yet accurately written without losing essence. No problem for foreign language speakers.
Best for students, residents, and fellows who cover CV medicine, such as CV anesthesiology, CV surgery, and cardiology.
Also good for reviewing recent concepts in CV physiology as teaching staffs.

Thoughtfully written and comprehensive

This valuable practice management book for general medical practitioners is very well written, easy to read and comprehensive. The author, with many years of experience in GP surgeries, as a Practice Manager, is highly qualified to bring this handbook to market. An excellent read with practical suggestions.

Really really good, But FREE elsewhere (wish I would have known).

I purchased this book some time ago when it was a little (but not much) less expensive. Gorgias Press makes available a wide variety of scholarly texts on Eastern Christianity. As other reviewers have written, the book is quite valuable and contains many beautiful prayers of unique quality. I would certainly recommend buying the book if you can afford it and are interested in a physical copy. BUT you should understand several things before you make a decision, because scholarly books can be expensive and if you are a devoted Eastern Christian or interested in the DEVOTIONAL side of this book, I caution these things:

1) This is a reprint. This is a facsimile. This is a reprint of a rough translation of the Syriac Orthodox "Sh'himo" published by Bede Griffiths in the 1960's. This explains the cost, but you should be aware that the typeface in this book looks like it was written on a typewritter (because it probably originally was). There are several typos due to its off the typewritter feel and this does at times make reading aloud from it awkward.

2) This book is a paperback. Though I think you can buy a hard cover copy directly from Gorgias Press (at a much steeper price) you will most likely get a paperback. Just keep in mind that you're paying almost $50 for a paperback.

3) The translations in this book are good, but lack a certain luster. Sometimes it is awkward. Also, I am not sure if this book was translated directly from Syriac or from Malayam since Bede Griffiths translated it in the Indian counterpart of that church.

4) Most importantly this book/liturgy is FREE elsewhere! The Syrian Orthodox Church in America has made it available as a free and easy to use app on the Play Store. (Look up "Sh'himo") The same group also MUSICALLY PERFORMS the liturgies that you can download for $5 and listen to!

I know how many Orthodox Christians and Orthodox seekers are also big book buyers and that you can feel pressure to buy a book full of extravagant liturgical prayers that will bring you close to God. But HONESTLY, as an underpaid college student, I know that YOU DON'T HAVE TO! If you want to pray with quality translations of these prayers, just get the free app so you don't have to flip around a cheap paperback with no bookmarks. If you are a Griffiths scholar, go ahead and buy the book! It's worth it if you deem it so!

Bede Griffith's translation is exceedingly awkward (although exquisite by the very poor standards of English translation of Syriac Orthodox liturgical material), but I have to give this book four stars, as it is the only complete English translation of the Syriac Orthodox Divine Office, which is one of the most beautiful divine offices available, areanged over the course of a week.

Barton Paul Levenson’s novels include Max & Me, Year of the Human, Ella the Vampire, I Will and Parole. One of the ten best Succubus stories of 2013

One of the things that I think about, quite a lot actually, is the question of what do the “higher powers” think of Succubi. The question of what they see Succubi as, if they have a place in the universe where they are loved for themselves and not what others believe they are.

Mixed with that is the question of why can’t a Succubus be good? Why is it that they must, apparently, be “evil?” It is a choice more than anything else that make them who and what they are. Sometimes that choice is doing the right thing because it is the right thing. Sometimes it is looking past what the universe tells you and instead taking the chance to believe in one very important truth. We make mistakes. We learn from them. Everyone does.

The Celibate Succubus, I think is really one of the top ten stories about Succubi that I have encountered this year. I’ve said that story and the characters to drive it forwards matter the most. That truth is so very clearly seen in this work by far…

Delilah’s journey through this work is in many ways a story of discovery, acceptance, loss, love and sacrifice. We see her live the moments at first without understanding what is happening around her, not seeing her faults and having some of the poorer parts of her come to the fore. However, there are two things that from the beginning set her apart. One is that she has a soul. While some can see only her physical form: wings, horns and tail, there is within her a compassion that so many around her seem to have lost. The other is that she found her own truth and she holds that through her trials and tribulations.

Delilah, as I have said, has the aspects of one of the Succubi that I adore, one of them being quite fond of her tail, which I loved, but it is her inherent personality and will that for me at least makes her quite close to what my own vision for the Succubi is. She knows right from wrong and walks that line every day. She is tested by the world she calls home when she makes the choice to protect an innocent and through that begins a path that no one, least her, would have expected.

She finds friendship from some, hate from others. She finds one soul that loves her for being who she is. She finds another that cannot accept her for what she represents to them. Doors open to friendships that are tested, strongly, but they hold and in doing so Delilah becomes more than she was. She… learns what it means to be human and that knowledge is the most precious thing she holds as the story goes on.

She sees the good, the ones that give her a chance to be more, to see more of herself and to become a part of a greater whole that she did not expect to be. There are rough patches of course, but they allow her to learn and find her way. As we all do.

This is not a work of erotica, to be clear. It is focused on Delilah discovering that anyone can be found to be worthy, loved, and cherished no matter who they are if they can see that within themselves. But also she finds that those that serve in the darkness can be more devils than those she had known all of her life. She learns lessons that with her own soul take her towards something she never imagined would be.

The supporting characters, especially those that are with Delilah are well told with their own histories, beliefs and arcs within the work. While Delilah is eighteen, at least physically, she is quite a lot older than that intellectually. The thing is when she meets and make friends that are her apparent age… It really becomes a passing of age moment where she learns more about herself and those she calls her friends discover that anything is possible. And the truth they share finally is one that matters.

There were a few points where the story took a darker turn, one of which to be honest I turned past because it touched on something I find hard to read about. There does have to be darkness in the light and as Delilah is part of those that turn it away that has to be… I just felt that in one instance that it was a little bit too much when compared with the rest of the work and I wonder if it would not have served the story better for it being off the page and only referred to instead of shown.

The climax of the story was in one part a resolution of Delilah and another character’s strife. In another it felt… sad. I had a hope that there would be something that Delilah promised another character by the end of the work, but it did not come. She is given something that she, and many others, did not believe she could have or be. It made me smile when one character told Delilah that she looked right with her wings and tail. It’s nice to know that they do see that.
The writing is wonderful, being the right tone for the moment when it arrives, and setting an image in the words that is very vivid and clear. Strong characters, settings, and plots that weave neatly through the work as a whole.

In short, well and truly recommended reading.

Really one of the best stories about Succubi that I have seen this year. There is an open door at the end which I would love to see the author take someday… Perhaps they will and if so I will be there to see that tale as well. I hope that day will come…

Great thought provoking read

honest review. I have to say that I really enjoyed it and found myself discussing some of the issues that this book delves into. This was definitely not a light read, filled with abuse, the characters struggle to figure out what is right and wrong and a never ending battle between good and bad. The characters were extremely well written each with enough history to connect with. The storyline was very well executed from the glimpse into hell and the demon world to the headquarters of Team Packer to Delilah’s experience in high school.
I have to say that this book was a very different take on the succubus story, this book is more about self-discovery and being who you choose to be regardless of where you are from or how you were raised. Excellent read, which I highly recommend.

Story might be a decent idea, but it was not well executed. The writing and flow to it was atrocious. I don't even know how it got such high reviews. I'm one of those people who can look past bad writing for a good story if there is some sort of flow. This is broken up and feels extremely forced. Not a fan.

great - if you already know how to practice

like others have stated, there's not a lot of ramp-up to this book. I'm self taught at the piano, but was a semi-professional musician on a different instrument, so I know how to learn music. I breezed through the first few exercises, then re-discovered exactly why I set this goal to "learn to play piano properly". There's no busy-work, each exercise teaches you at least two or three different skills, sometimes all at once, so if you don't know how to practice, how to pick apart music, how to slow it painfully down and do monotonous repetitions, frustration is in store. I like a little variety, and am moving slowly enough through this that I'm supplementing with Czerny 599 and maybe some Hamon so I have a few things to teach each skill, and I don't just pull my old trick of being a great mimic instead of learning (so making sure I can apply my new found skills to more than just the piece in this book that introduces them).

If you really want to learn to play piano, and know how to practice, this book will do it, but you'll likely be happier if you supplement it with some other studies, and work them in parallel. If this is your first crack at learning a musical instrument, this might not be the book for you unless you sort out how to practice (others here have described their methods, variations on the same theme), or get a teacher to help you sort it out.

A proper index of pieces would improve this book, as well as printing on paper that's easy to write in pencil on, but other than that, this book is actually really amazing. I'd recommend it highly, with the above cautions.

More than just a piano book, this is a ...

More than just a piano book, this is a book heavy on theory and improvisation and will teach you not only about tapping keys, but also about understanding music. I got this book three years ago, never having read sheet music or played anything other than chopsticks (poorly), and now I play live in a band.

If you set aside the time and deal with the frustration of learning a skill, this book will guide you into pulling off impressive feats and understanding music in a way that you never did before.

I'm pleased with this book and CD.

This book offers a coherent system of learning the piano and music theory for those who prefer to self-teach. It's geared toward a more mature audience and presents in-depth explanations of most concepts. The book begins with a history of the piano, which I found interesting, but not useful for learning to play the piano. The author then gives the basics of classical theory, moving into jazz/rock/blues harmony and beyond.

I particularly like the fact that this book provides suggested fingerings for right AND left hand for nearly every scale and arpeggio beyond the single octave. Many sources I've encountered present one octave fingerings, and often times only for the right hand. Since I am already an accomplished bassist and guitar player, this helped me overcome my technical limitations to quickly play the material I already knew on fretted instruments.

The CD gives human performances of the exercises which help with understanding the dynamics of the written music. That is, how the pieces sound as actual music and not just a technical exercise.

This book features a hardcover and is spiral bound so the pages lay flat. It's sort of a nuisance when you close the book, but great for actually using the book on a music stand.

I didn't have any trouble with the European Vs. American terminology. Although, I do giggle when I read the word crotchet.

Handy and Hilarious

I just love this book. It covers basically anything you've ever had a question about. Back hair, Sex, the proper blazer length, how to break off a date, cologne, and tons more. If you want to brush up on your manners this is the book for you. It's a pleasure to read, with loads of illustrations and diagrams. The authors are unapologetic and blunt, with just the right amount of witty humor.

I think this was my 19 year old son's favourite present this Christmas. He loved it, couldn't stop reading it. It was a fun thing to reference too. and very very practical and told me stuff I didn't know and I thought I knew everything.

Simply dreadful

What a dreadful book. I'm amazed that such a prestigious organization as Debretts would publish such a lightweight book. If this is how a modern gentleman is expected to live then, that the age of 52, I think I'm going to have go back into my cave as a traditionalist!

To give you some examples of the useless trivia in this book here are a few areas: The section on office meetings tells you to "be punctual". Really?; There is a section dedicated to the martial arts, hardly the sport of a gentleman; How to act in a VIP area of a bar - I'm not sure a gentleman would ever wish to be seen in such modern salubrious places; How to wear flip-flops! - no self-respecting gentleman would ever be seen wearing flip-flops; How to climb Mount Everest! - how tacky; When flying "never try to chat up the stewardess" - oh dear. I could go on, but I think you probably get the idea.

Yes there are some interesting sections in the book on purchasing, owning and caring for, and wearing clothing appropriate to the style of a gentleman. There are some sections on etiquette in restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. But this form of etiquette has not changed for many many years, and in fact Debrett's guide to etiquette from the early 80s is still fairly applicable today.

This book is so lightweight, and so inappropriate to the traditional gentlemen, that it could actually just float away, and never be seen again. The world would be a better place if that happened.

This is the perfect guide for both Graphic Design Students and Educators - in giving advice about freelance design and how to ease into "real world" experiences. Since the book is divided into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Sections, students can relate at any level. Additionally Hannam provides external resources and downloads.

Exceptionally readable and practical guide for arts-related freelancers

A GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENT'S GUIDE TO FREELANCE is specifically written for graphic design students preparing for graphic design careers which, at least initially, involve freelancing. In this regard, it is exceptionally thorough, readable and practical.

Its usefulness, however, is not limited to current graphic design students or recent graduates. I am neither. But as a freelance instructor and tutor of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (as well as web designer), I work frequently with beginning graphic designers, and also deal with the multitude of tasks related to having an arts-related business. The audience for this book is significantly larger than the title may imply - it is likely to be valuable to readers who like me are freelancers in related fields, and with a variety of levels of experience.

Divided into sections related to tasks facing beginning, intermediate and advanced stages of developing a freelance business (my only criticism of this division is the author's relegating the task of creating a web site to the advanced level) author Hannam discusses just about every topic his readers are likely to want to address. His book answers all of the following questions (and more), and gives helpful examples:

How best can you define your business, choose a name, create your logo?

How do you create a business plan for yourself?

What kinds of projects are most suitable for a beginning freelancer? An intermediate or advanced freelancer?

What helpful tips can enable you to improve your resume?

In what different ways might you prepare portfolios for freelancing, agency work or graduate school?

How do you attract clients - and determine the best clients for your skills?

How should you inquire about a job, prepare for an interview, and negotiate an offer?

How do you most effectively your ideas to clients?

How do you determine fees, bill clients, and set up a billing system?

How do you estimate your work time, and plan for the time and cost of revisions?
What equipment do you need?

What you must do legally and to satisfy tax requirements?

How can you most effectively promote yourself through designing your business card and web site?

What should you do to effectively organize your business - creating a master client list, and system for saving, retaining, organizing and accessing files?

Personally, I found the author's tips for organizing a freelance business to be particularly useful, as well as some of the features he includes at the end of the book - nine pages of valuable tips from graphic design professionals, and an annotated list of approximately 50 web sites recommended to graphic designers and freelancers in related professions.

All-in-all, this is an outstanding book - not only practical, but beautifully designed, and a joy to read. No beginning graphic designer or arts-related freelancer should be without it.

Good, Practical advice

The best advice in this book comes early on. The author advices the graphic design student to seek out freelance work prior to graduation. To begin to build a portfolio. And then the author goes on to describe where those opportunities might exist and how to set rates.
The author gives real life scenarios that help you set apart from the people who pepper their portfolio with school projects (making the likelihood that your portfolio will resemble someone else's much higher).
You are shown how to understand social and technological trends before determining the nature of your business, picking a business name. There is quick identification as to strengths and weaknesses of a business plan. There is practical advice about creating an LLC and how to get an employers identification number for the IRS. The book not only talks about how to attract clients, but also how to hold the interview once you've found someone.
There are creative hints about how to find an internship.
All in all, I think this book is a creative and supportive source for students to grow into practiced and professional graduates.
