you absolutely will not regret buying this book and if you do then you're dumb

I never write reviews for products, so this is a first but I felt some weird sort of obligation to do this. I've been admiring Bo Burnham's work for a few months now, so I'm not a super dedicated, long term fan by any means. I found a few of his standup videos a couple months ago and was so impressed by the depth of his comedy and even more so by the fact that he's in his early 20s. I find that people give him grief for being young and for coming from the internet but if you actually listen to his comedy, you can tell that it's very well thought out and that he's a very smart person, well beyond his years. So I bought the book, expecting it to be hilarious and well thought out, and thats exactly what it is. What impresses me the most is the variation that exists between the poems, not all of them are going to make you laugh. Some of them are pretty deep, and deal with serious issues and what I love is that he doesn't try to make you laugh every second you are reading it. He reaches this amazing level of introspection that is so palpable and relatable (at least for me) that blows my mind. That being said, you will laugh when you read this book. There are plenty of poems that had me doubled over in intense laughter. Bo's very talented and very dedicated, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next, whatever it is I trust it will be spectacular. So basically, buy the book (it's good).

Perfectly balanced book of poetry

I absolutely love this book. I'd like to think that my personal bias for Bo Burnham (following and adoring his comedy since the youtube days) doesn't have anything to do with my recommendation for anyone and everyone to get a hold of a copy of this book.

The balance between silly, laugh-out-loud funny, disturbing, and good poetry is astonishing. Even some of the disturbing or silly poetry contains excellent use of literary devices such as alliteration, rhyming, irony, satire, etc.

I think it is inevitable that a comparison between "Egghead" and Shell Silverstein books will be drawn. Whether you think Silverstein is better because he is a true poet and not a comedian with a poetry book or not, it can't be denied that there is an uncanny resemblance between the two. The works have many similar qualities (writing style and illustration) and are both excellent works of poetry. However, what's special about Bo's book is that it's dirtier and more appropriate for an older age. The description in the information is really very true, "...book that will make you think, laugh and think, 'why did I just laugh?'"

And lastly, the illustration puts the book over the top for me. Each drawing is so detailed and well done, and really adds something to the book. I have very high praise for Chance Bone. And of course for Bo, for once again being so incredibly talented.

Its a pretty good book. There are serious poems, funny poems and some are just flat out stupid but its a nice combination.

About the Author
Margaret L. Andersen (B.A., Georgia State University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is the Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware, where she has also served in several senior administrative positions, including most recently as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Diversity. She holds secondary appointments in Black American Studies and Women and Gender Studies. She is the author of several books, including (among others) THINKING ABOUT WOMEN, recently published in its tenth edition; the best-selling anthology, RACE, CLASS, AND GENDER (co-edited with Patricia Hill Collins, now in its ninth edition); LIVING ART: THE LIFE OF PAUL R. JONES, AFRICAN AMERICAN ART COLLECTOR; and ON LAND AND ON SEA: A CENTURY OF WOMEN IN THE ROSENFELD COLLECTION. She is a member of the National Advisory Board for Stanford University's Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, the Past Vice President of the American Sociological Association, and Past President of the Eastern Sociological Society, from which she received the ESS Merit Award. She has also received two teaching awards from the University of Delaware and the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award.

A book for beginners and those well acquainted with Hatha Yoga in its many facets., not simply as an exercise.

I have been an off and on yoga student for many years, and am a spiritual seeker, as well. I practice meditation and have studied many of the religious areas that Strom writes about. So I am not new to any of this, but he presents it in a whole new charmingly lucid way. I reacquainted myself with much I had forgotten and many ideas took on new meaning for me. I even found many of my own thoughts brought into sharp focus in words I did not have for them. This is a wonderful book. I know I will re-read it again. I heartily endorse it for the beginner who is searching as well as those already experiencing the Search.

I haven't finished the book yet, but one of my first reactions were that there so many books that are better written than this. I like when things are explained in a simple way, which you will find in this book, but you will have a feeling that some things are so self explanatory and evident that it's anying to read at times. Even "the power of now" is written in a more engaging way, tho its hugely overrated.

If you liked the book, and think it's amazing, consider taking a look at Alexander Lowen's and Irvin yalom's books.

some reminders and some revelations

I began my meditation and yoga practice less than a year ago. I feel fortunate to have met teachers and found a studio that already teaches and practices in ways that are compatible with Strom's teachings. What I really appreciate about this book is how so much of it made me say to myself "I knew that ". But we forget and so it is good to have books like these to remind us and to also provide us some new revelations. We all know that as we practice, as we breathe, we are unpeeling an onion of knowledge and wisdom--and we are startled to see that it was in us all the time. Each moment and each breath bring us new learning and new joys. This book also has the clear ring of lived truth, which is perhaps why I read every word (I have stacks of books that are partially read). I will be in a workshop with Max Strom next month; I am now looking forward to it with great anticipation. He provides simple steps to start healing, you can set your own pace. The important thing is to begin.

About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk. His life long efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He is the founder of Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon, and has taught at Columbia University and the Sorbonne. The cover photo itself (that of a monk bent in prayer) speaks volumes about the contents of the book - that of prayer, prayer and prayer. In the likeness of books on prayer by Thich Nhat Hanh, this one seeks to uncover the benefits of meditation as prayer. The author proposes many benefits and (if one is to believe) all peoples in the world, regardless of race, language or religion, should allow themselves the benefit to sit in silence, meditating either in silence, with a chant, with words from Scripture, or with concentration on the breath. The latter, when done with full concentration, is able to nourish and to heal the mind, body and spirit. The author provides various exercises on how to meditate using the breath at the end of his book. I believe some of these exercises have been covered in his other books as well.

The author quotes from Christian Scripture and even uses the Lord's Prayer - the "Our Father" - in one of his examples on meditative prayer. Really, this is a book not only for Buddhist meditation practitioners but for all seekers of meditation practices. The exercises to still the mind apply to all races, language or religion. If we can all practice the mindfulness that the author writes of, we can apply the practice to our faiths. For example, a Christian could use the ability to stay in tune with silence to meditate on God's Word, or a Buddhist could use this ability to be silent within to concentrate on a chant. The idea is really how one can grow to befriend silence in view of the opposing attacks from the noise of daily living - television, media, people around us, loud music, our fears and worries, the pursuit of desires and wants, the list goes on.

I like the book for the solace and comfort and the encouragement it contains. As one who enjoys silence, I could embrace the spiritual benefits of meditation that the author writes about. I wish more people will practise meditation because then the "collective consciousness" (as Thich Nhat Hanh calls it) of the created world can only get better and in turn rub the sense of peace, joy and tranquility to others. Powerful

One of my favorite passages in the New Testament is the story in Mark about the woman who is healed when she touches Jesus' garment. Jesus, walking in a crowd "perceiving in himself that a power had gone forth from him" immediately turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my garments?" I thought of this passage and finally came to understand a little of Jesus' reaction as I read Thich Nhat Hanh's beautiful little book on prayer.Hanh's descriptions of prayer and his examples of praying allowed me to see, maybe for the first time, to experience prayer as energy and to feel its power. How wonderful to realize how this energy connects all being and even more wonderful to know that as human beings we have the ability (and responsibility) to direct the energy (the ground of being) for the good of all. Thich Nhat Hanh's book is practical not in a "how to" sense but in a "practice" sense. May it help you, as it did me, to make the practice of prayer as ordinary, as real, as powerful, as life-giving as . . .breathing.

Krause puts the "Self" back into "Self-Help"

The Answer is a beautiful gem of a book. Full of ancient and modern wisdom, from The Dalai Lama to Burt Bacharach, Jennifer Krause shows us there is inspiration in all things. The Answer taps into our modern anxiety that we want to be all things at all times and feel like failures most of the time. Ms. Krause infuses The Answer with humor and fascinating facts and quotes, making this "self-help" book just plain fun to read. However, it gets under your skin, makes you realise that one life-pattern does not fit all, that each of us has a special and unique place in this world, that sometimes it's okay to just be you. Unlike other self-help titles, this one does not give advice as to "how to get everything one wants in 30 days or less" format. It says to us all, you are the wisest person you know, listen to your inner self and you will know what to do. I felt very empowered by "The Answer".

Wisdom literature in the finest sense

We need more books and more citizens like Rabbi Krause. Every day we watch our leaders, friends and selves stumble because the tough questions haven't been asked. Krause is aware that any answer is determined by the question. Oddly this has often been overlooked by those claiming to offer guidance. The Answer is thus not self-help, but wisdom literature, an ancient genre deserving of space on every bookshelf.
