A great reference book written by practical minded scientists

I have had the pleasure of talking with both authors on the phone, and have learned that both authors have considerable practical experience, and sound theoretical knowledge.

This book emphasizes reflective displays. As electronics become more portable, and more innocuous, the need for reflective displays will grow.

Wu and Yang present a comprehensive description of all the major display types, and offer some real gems about promising display innovatives. My favorite is Yang's discussion of double guest host lcd's, and the possibility of using ultrathin polyester films (normally used as capacitor films) as the internal film for the ghlcd. Although this idea had been covered in SID Conference Proceedings, it takes an innovative writer like Yang to highlight the commercial potential of ultrathin polyester films.

Likewise Wu has considerable hands on experience with military avionics, and writes with a confidence of someone who understands lcds intimately.

I strongly recommend your considering this book if you are investigating recent innovations in reflective displays.

A great reference!

Both authors are very knowledgable, and I have been a fan of their technical papers for years. The book is well outlined and illustrated. I found that it covers current state of the art very well. It covers the basic LC architectures and presents interesting alternatives. My favorite aspect is the excellent and complete technical reference listings.

This book is highly recommended for anyone that is interested in ergonomics. This book covers many physiological and psychological aspects of work design, as well as environmental considerations, manual materials handling considerations, etc. This book contains many figures and illustrations to assist the reader in ergonomic and work design principles. The book may be a difficult read at times, but it does provide a great deal of useful information.

I've found earlier editions of Simon Benninga's Financial Modeling to be a great reference, and I've used them often. The fourth edition again offers helpful tips for using Excel in the most efficient and powerful manner to solve finance problems. These tips are illustrated in clear, step-by-step fashion so that the reader can start using them right away. The fourth edition also offers an improved flow of topics within the primary headings of Corporate Finance and Valuation, Portfolio Models, Valuation of Options, Valuing Bonds, and Monte Carlo Methods, along with updated examples and exercises. Financial Modeling continues to be a valuable resource for practicing finance professionals, students, and professors.

The Best Choice for Fundamental Financial Modeling

I have used Simon Benninga's "Financial Modeling with Excel" for five years to teach undergraduate computational finance [...]. My thinking remains that my students have been well served by this textbook.

The inadequacies that limit my assessment to four stars and need to be addressed in the third edition are: 1) frustrating errors in the text and models, for which the errata sheet and corrected models (available at: [...] only improve, but do not heal. My students find new, undocumented, errors each semester. 2) the data sets and examples are getting, frankly, a little old. It is the year 2005 as I write this, but the data sets and examples end in 1999, a year in which my current students were in high school. 3) the models, while excellent as introductions to the field, are now at the point of being fundamental, rather than exemplary. This is not Prof. Benninga's fault, but as the other reviews from professionals here attest, Excel modeling has advanced in all fields (option pricing, financial statements, portfolio optimization, bond metrics, etc). When this volume was introduced, it was adequate for helping MBA and Master of Science in Finance students build essential modeling skills. Sadly, it now is only appropriate for raw beginners or undergraduates. A new text with a larger scope that addresses advances in the fields is called for. 4) While it is a subject in itself, the book is seriously hindered by not introducing basic Monte Carlo simulation in Excel. 5) No information on downloading data from BLOOMBERG, REUTERS, and other historical and market data providers. It would add to the scope of the text, but 6) fitting DCF models to yield curves also would be welcome.

Even with these criticisms, Benninga's Financial Modeling remains the best book in the field for what it seeks to accomplish. It covers the major topics of finance that are appropriately addressed with models: financial statement, firm valuation and credit metrics, portfolio construction, fixed income metrics, option pricing, etc. Benninga's FM also compares favorably with his two nearest competitors.

Powel and Baker's "The Art of Spreadsheet Modeling" is a two pronged monster: it seeks to be a meta-level theoretical work on spreadsheet modeling, and then introduces modeling Monte Carlo simulation as a fundamental component of Excel (a student edition of CrystalBall is included in the text, and is the only reason to buy this book). The gap between the two is a Grand Canyon's worth of knowledge space that this text does not fill in and nearly ignores. The student who uses only Powel and Baker is ill served; whereas if he uses Benninga, he knows how, why, when and what to model. Consider Powel & Baker as sketches of a concept car with simulated wind tunnel runs, whereas Benninga shows how to build your own kit car and drive it around. Powel and Baker's concept car is beautiful, advanced, gracious, but doesn't exist and doesn't run; Benninga's kit car is like a Lotus Super Seven: simple, runs, is a blast to drive, but is dangerous in heavy traffic and you would not want to go on a 1,000 mile journey with it (i.e. or build a DCF model for the Goldman Sachs LBO team with only Benninga).

Chandan Sengupta's "Financial Modeling Using Excel and VBA" is the only book that comes close to Benninga, and I recommend it as another perspective for my students who want to continue with financial modeling. However, Sengupta's work is flawed on two counts: 1) it is clear throughout that he had read Benninga, and 2) he dropped much of Benninga's content in favor of adding wordy explanatory paragraphs to soften the blow of the fact that modeling is mathematically and technically both boring and intense work. With those criticisms in mind, his work still has neater, leaner, more compressed models with updated contemporary detail.

There are three other books, Scott Proctor's "Building Financial Models with Microsoft Excel: A Guide for Business Professionals," which focuses on building vanilla financial statements, as does John Tjia "Building Financial Models." Mary Jackson & Mike Staunton's "Advanced Modeling in Finance using Excel and VBA" is also now dated and seriously flawed and limited in scope), however it is the next step following Benninga.

For those working in top-tier banks, the internal training and modeling documents, and examples built by colleagues, will likely surpass by light years what is offered in these books. And so for beginners, Benninga remains the the best choice and first step, until something better comes along, or Benninga himself produces a new edition.

the single most useful book for finance students and professionals ever published

Simon Benninga's 3rd Edition of Financial Modelling with Excel is the single most useful book for finance students and professionals ever published and continues to offer an outstanding reference and textbook for students and practitioners of applied finance.

For further information, please use the "Look Inside" feature and examine the Table of Contents carefully, because I will emphasize selected portions.

It is difficult to overstate how useful and practical and helpful this work is for a wide audience and Financial Modelling is the single finance book I recommend for everyone after they have taken (or read themselves) Introductory Finance.

For those looking for "one-stop-shopping" for models that resemble those of professional financial analysts then there is no better value than Benninga's FM3.

Benninga's FM3 is a coal-face work for those who must make financial decisions using models. There are further specialist texts in topics covered here (credit modelling, portfolio construction, option pricing), but the models in FM3 are the first advanced models applied to loans, bonds, options, and equity portfolios. Master these and then specialized texts are easier to digest.

"Cookbook" metaphors are too strong and do not do this work justice, for Financial Modelling 3rd (FM3) is not a mere collection of recipes but rather topical introduction, explanation, and then direct technique.

If we can make a comparison with a "cookbook" then FM3 falls somewhere between "The Joy of Cooking" and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." "Joy" combines chapters on technique, ingredients, and tools with dense pages of endless recipes, whereas "Mastering" emphasises technique and a few well-selected recipes.

The welcome new chapters cover bank valuation, the Black-Litterman approach to portfolio optimization, and Monte Carlo methods and applications to option pricing, and the previous 2nd edition's small chapter on using array functions and formulas has been expanded. The chapter on data downloads from YAHOO is also welcome, especially for those on a budget.

There is a single significant flaw in the work, which is excusable and redeemable. Far too often the discounting in the chapters is done over a flat interest rate curve. While the term structure of interest rates is covered, and historical term structures and parallel shifts and steepening and flattening is covered in isolation in a thorough chapter and with wonderful data files, the necessity and explicit connection of discounting from an appropriate yield curve is left implied and only mentioned in a few exercises. I would have preferred a "round up" chapter where each of the subjects treated (bond discounting, portfolio expected returns, options, etc.) under a yield curve with advanced models. Sure BLOOMBERG and REUTERS have these sort of things (often incorrectly) programmed, but students need to learn explicitly about them and do the exercise themselves to comprehend the importance of curve discounting.

The CD attached in the back of the book is alone worth the price, with over two score of models that are practical and adaptable for students and professionals alike. The files are stored and separated according to chapters and subject matter. Each file has logical progression of the concepts advanced in the book, and each separate sheet either stands alone or appropriately links to data and models on other sheets, so editing for your own purposes is a breeze.

For those who want to train themselves in Finance (not "personal finance") then I suggest reading Copeland, Weston, & Shastri's Financial Theory and Corporate Policy (4th Edition) and Brealey, Myers, and Marcus's "Corporate Finance" and "Investments" followed by working through FM3. Such a course would give any self-disciplined person the equivalent of a Masters of Science in Finance.

Rather then comment extensively on the content of the book (as others have done rather well), I felt like I would pass this tip (which I wish I had known to prevent frustration). I feel that anyone without a working knowledge of Visual Basic, and manuevering around Excel should obtain the skill set with the well written technical sections. I would suggest starting with part VI introduction to Visual Basic (chapters 36-41) then moving on to Technical Consideration (chapters 29-35) and THEN moving onto the substantial matter of the first 4 parts. This will help keep you from getting frustrated while interacting with the software and allow you to focus on the concepts. Again this is only for individuals without a working knowledge of the platforms, if you do possess those skills then the above recommendation is a moot point.

Thorough and Enlightening

I have only had the book a very short time, so I can not thoroughly review the entire text. However I can say that this book should not be looked at as a reference, per se, as it will not be useful ordinarily as a something to grab off the shelf in an emergency, critical care setting. In my opinion, It is better suited as a teaching textbook, reviewing and explaining the physiology and pathophysiology of many critical care situations as well as the rational for why/how to approach, treat and monitor each situation ...all in considerable depth. I can say from what I've already read that there is quite a bit of great, detailed information regarding fluid therapy, (why use one or the other, the different colloidal fluids options..why choose which colloid and when) blood gases, shock, SIRS, MODS ...these are the chapters I have read and they are excellent. There is a plethora of useful tables with drugs, drug doses, equipment, and there are many explanatory, colorful figures throughout.

As I said I can not thoroughly review the entire book...the book is very big (more than 900 over-sized pages) and quite heavy, poundage-wise. It is printed on high-quality glossy paper...and I've only gotten through a couple of the chapters in several weeks. I think to get the most from a book like this, it is best to read it thoroughly and carefully, one chapter at a time. It may take quite awhile but I think it'll be worth it. Personally, I don't like buying books then filing them decoratively on a shelf with the hope that some day I can find something I need in there...somewhere. I recommend that if you buy the book, you actually read it.

I am not an emergency/ critical care veterinarian specialist, just a general practitioner, so this book is for me a highly educational in-depth window into this very fascinating, challenging and likely quite rewarding ( hopefully most of the time) specialty.

Being refreshed in the fight!

Having been in pastoral ministry for 30 years, I've read my share of books on spiritual warfare. Graeme's book is practical and pastoral and I was "refreshed" in my spirit to continue fighting the good fight of faith. It reads like a novel, unlike other books on the topic that were more like a manual, and sometimes a bit laborious to get through. What I've gained from this book is a new resolve to receive my "marching orders" from God; whatever assignments He has for me, I want to faithfully commit to their fulfillment. As Graeme says: "The church is the trustee and steward of the Gospel. The church in union with the resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ, is the fundamental preserving factor of God and His character on earth." If you're looking for your first book on the topic of spiritual authority, or you need fresh inspiration on the topic, I highly recommend this one!

This book is such a great resource! Graeme takes serious things seriously and light stuff light. So many books on these topics are a little off-the-wall, but not this one. What a relief! Funny, wise and practical and biblically grounded. Graeme & Sabrina are like parents to so many, and truly fight to see the captives set free. Thankful for this book.

In a word this book was EXCELLENT!!! One of the best that I have ever read on using our spiritual authority. The author emphasizes the importance of prayer and more importantly, the distractions that often come when one is praying. I have dealt with this so many numerous times that it has often caused me to just get up off of my knees in defeat. However, for the first time ever in anything that I have ever read or heard, the author of this book gives you examples and suggestions on how to combat the spirit of distraction during prayer. That information alone was absolutely priceless and worth the purchase price of the book. Thank you so much Mr. Walsh for allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you and through you, to your readers in this book. May God's blessings be MULTIPLIED unto you!

This book is great for and introductory course.

This book is great for and introductory course. The examples convey the ideas, the tensor analysis is developed throughout the text but it is not excessive (the good lord knows Tensors can be one or two courses on their own). The problems at the end of the chapter are ALL workable, and each of them makes you use some of the analysis developed. That tells me that the author has been around teaching many, many years, and is really interested in the students gathering a solid understanding of continuum mechanics. This book would be useful for folks that have switched fields (a EE/ME/Aero turned acoustician, or turned Material Scientist), who went through the standard curriculum (continuum mechanics has been historically taught by its own department -say at U of I, you can get a PhD in the field) or in the Aerospace. Once thought a "dead" field - sensors, and smart materials force the folks to either review or learn (like me).

started with no knowledge of continuum mechanics and this book laid out a solid and reliable presentation of the material with very beautiful use of tensors. this book has worked for me as a stand-alone source of learning the subject without any prof or use of Utube. I have gone through half of it and noticed just one minor typo.there are good number of examples in the book. I would strongly recommend it to any beginner . I wish it had come with a separate practice book to accompany it.

Dykstra, an architect and teacher of construction management courses, offers an introduction to managing contracted construction projects in 25 chapters.
Chapters 1-7 describe the construction project environment. Chapters 8-16 address the contract documents and the bidding process. Chapters 17-22 describe the actual construction of the facility. The author wraps up the book in the final three chapters that deal with payments, contract closeout, and litigation.
By and large, the chapters tend to address issues of the construction contract process chronologically, and this feature is helpful to the reader.
Additionally, each chapter contains definitions of the relevant nomenclature and a set of self-test questions. The premise of the coverage of topics is that the design of the work has already been completed, and that the actual implementation of the construction will need to be accomplished by a construction contractor. Although the book discusses project management topics such as estimating and scheduling, the thrust of the work is on contract management issues such as the bidding environment, bidding process, incremental payments, and contract-related negotiations.
This book is useful for students taking introductory courses in construction management at both four-year and two-year colleges.

I have been teaching construction-related courses at a California Junior College for the past 5 years and have 20 years experience managing construction projects. I am a licensed general contractor and an urban planning consultant. This is the most clearly written, comprehensive and well-organized textbook on the construction management process I have seen to date. It has filled in gaps in my knowledge.

As a former employee of New York City and one who was involved in both contract and subcontract work, I found this text both well organized and clearly written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone involved in construction project management work, it is an extremely helpful "how to text" as one works through this difficult and at times complicated process.

Construction Project Management by Alison Dykstra is a must have for anyone who will be managing a construction project. Ms. Dykstra lays out in a very logical and complete form all the necessary steps from conceptualizing the project, vetting architects and tradesmen and other professionals, insurance, government approvals, hazardous materials, payments, organizing the work sequence to final sign-offs and Certificates of Occupancy. "Construction Project Management" lays it out in such a way that everyone will find it useful, from someone renovating a 1-bedroom apartment or bungalow to building a McMansion, from someone doing their first project to someone who needs a refresher on all the issues and details that need to be considered to make a project go smoothly.

Lehrhaupt’s debut predictably counts on curious readers to ignore the dire warning and its accompanying threat, “You don’t want to let the monkeys out.” As pages turn, lemurs, baboons, and rhesus monkeys stalk into the spreads, where they pluck at the printed words and paint trees for themselves. The narrator’s uninspired pleas to readers (“Can you stop now? Everything used to be so good”) scaffold Forsythe’s (My Name Is Elizabeth!) primitive, earth-tone watercolors of the escalating melee. When a flock of toucans joins the troublemaking monkeys, and a giant alligator emerges from the right margin, readers get to be part of the solution: “You can catch them all in this book!” If Forsythe’s grainy illustrations echo Jon Klassen’s picture books, the mood in this outing is light and message-free. Children won’t be able to resist the urge to turn the page as they wade through caution tape, warning signs, and scenes of chaos. The madcap mayhem includes monkeys stealing the illustrator’s tools to paint their own drippy forest, a flock of swooping toucans, and an alligator sprawled across several spreads. Only the introduction of a banana trap can possibly save the story. The witty text is direct, and the art soars and leaps as much as the animals. Forsythe’s digital art features a subtle palette of browns and grays and the characters are rendered in a bold contemporary style with simple broad strokes. Debut author Lehrhaupt and New York Times Notable Children’s Book illustrator Forsythe (My Name Is Elizabeth!, 2011) team up for a laugh-out-loud romp through monkey-infested pages.

From the title and the endpapers’ warning signs (“I guess you don’t mind being mauled by mo___s”) to the opening pages’ admonishments not to venture further, the narrator repeatedly warns readers not to open this book. Those who do not heed these pleas release a troop of artistic monkeys that wreak havoc on the book itself. Nothing is safe from these wild invaders—not the art and not the text. When the narrator again urges readers to turn back, toucans join the fracas. Forsythe uses the same warm palette for the toucans as the monkeys, adding a nice continuity to an otherwise strange addition that slows down this well-paced story. Before the toucans can do much, an alligator shows up, frightening everyone. With chaos reigning supreme, the narrator turns to readers for help in laying out a plan to snare the animals inside the book. Forsythe’s digitally rendered art is hilariously expressive and laugh-worthy in its own right, and it is well-paired with Lehrhaupt’s spare comic text, successfully creating a book that is enjoyable both to read and behold.

Audiences are warned right away about about opening this picture book: “You don’t want to let the monkeys out.” The intrepid and curious, though, will forge on to find a single monkey poking his head in from the edge of the page—followed by a barrage of monkeys on the next, who muck everything up by fiddling with the text and splashing paint all over the illustrations. Continuing (and ignoring the narrator’s pleas to stop) leads to a slew of similarly invasive toucans and finally one very large and scary alligator. All hope seems to be lost until the narrator has an idea: “Only you can make things right. You should set a trap!” Once the trap, a banana, has been rigged, audiences can then slam the book shut with squeals of glee, keeping the mess of creatures stuck inside... Forsythe’s earth-toned, messy digital illustrations escalate along with the text, starting with warning signs against an austere white background but, as the critters get out of control, becoming full-bleed chaos. The art is also also reminiscent of a kid’s watercolor paintings, a feeling enhanced by the blob-shaped monkeys and wonky alligator—and the fact that the monkeys themselves draw the trees in the background. Kids following along will relish the exhilaration of breaking the rules as well as the simple but clever means of cleaning it all up. In the spirit of Press Here and other inventive books that play with the possibilities of the page turn, this debut from author Adam Lehrhaupt unequivocally warns children to close this book and turn away from it. So... kids won't be able to resist, just to see what their act of rebellion yields.

"Maybe you should put this book back. You don't want to let the monkeys out," the book begins. Matthew Forsythe (My Name Is Elizabeth!) draws a wide-eyed monkey on a sign that says "DANGER." When children inevitably turn the page, they are greeted with, "Why did you turn the page? Didn't you see the warning? Stay on this page. You are safe here." Signs that read "Stop," "Go Back" and "U-Turn," plus barbed wire and orange pylons, suggest that readers proceed at their own risk. On the next page, a monkey appears from stage right ("Oh, no. Now you've done it"); others follow. They parade onto the pages wielding paint cans, tubes of paint and brushes ("What a mess! Naughty monkeys"). While the story warns against impending doom, children will delight in the consequences of each page turn; the monkeys' artwork results in a lush and tropical landscape of gold, forest green and burnt orange. Everything halts due to the entrance of a predator, and it's up to readers to save the naughty monkeys.

Purchased this book for our kids. They love to laugh and really enjoy interactive, humorous books. This one is interactive but it's not funny like I had expected. It's actually kind of dull. I mean, we still read it but they don't enjoy it as much as our other books.
