Not that fun

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a huge fan of Dave Ramsey and what he is all about, just not a fan of this board game.
The rules that come with the game do not explain things very well, an amazing feet considering how simple it is. I had to look up some of the rules online the first and only time I played. One rule that was particularly hard to figure out was the "Save" cards. It wasn't clear whether a player received or had to pay out money upon drawing one. At first we thought you had to pay money to your emergency fund which you could never touch again (effectively losing the money for the whole game). This left many of us annoyed as we had to nearly empty all of our envelopes for food, utilities, and mortgage payments just to save more money in our emergency fund each time we drew a card. Fortunately, we cleared up that rule after searching online for a few minutes.
The bigger problem with the game is that even if the rules were explained clearly it still wouldn't change the fact that game is just not that fun. The reason is that there is no decision making. You roll, read the card, and do what it says. That's it. You never make any decisions about anything. Maybe this was by design as Dave wants to promote his methodical approach to finances through the game. Either way, the result is a game that emphasizes the "skills" of dice rolling and card drawing but ignores the skills of thinking and decision making.
I played with my two brothers and my brother-in-law and we all came to the same conclusion. There is no strategy that a player can implement to impact his chances of winning.
Having a board game is the thing to do right now for financial gurus. You have Cashflow 101 from Robert Kiyosaki, TRUMP the Game from Donald Trump, and now you have Act Your Wage from Dave Ramsey. My guess is that Dave decided he needed a board game and the game was developed very quickly and rushed to the market.
The game's best attributes are the educational aspects it offers. It teaches you the concept of planning ahead for expenses and better than anything else it teaches you Dave's envelope system. But let's be honest, who really needs a board game to teach them how to put money into envelopes?
If you do want to buy the game I would check Dave's website before purchasing on Amazon. As of the time of this review the game sells for $29.95 on Dave's website and $49.99 on Amazon.

Our Favorite Family Game: Teaching Tool for REAL Life

We completely love this game. Our boys are 8 & 11 years old and ask to play it every night after dinner. We use this game as a teaching tool to show how even within real life circumstances they will still have responsibilities. Yes, they can find themselves with four children, a mortgage and job loss. What then? How will they work hard to make the best of that situation and still get out of debt? This is a game that teaches about paying off debts and living in God's best. Dave has Biblical truths of financial freedom intertwined within the game, which our family appreciates.
To us this game was not hard to understand. Our first day receiving the game my husband read the directions a loud to us. We finished our first game with 4-players in a little over an hour. Our 8 & 11 year old boys next question, "can we play again."
We consider this game to be training for real life.
In Act Your Wage each player has to:
- Earn and keep a $1,000 emergency fund
- Use the envelope budgeting system
- Pay off debt using the debt snowball
- Be the first one to get out of debt and yell, "I'm Debt FREE!"
