A Line in the Andes -- a one year investigation developed at the Harvard Graduate school of design -- examines the transformative role of the first underground metro line currently being implemented in the city of Quito (Ecuador).
About the Author
Felipe Correa is an architect and urbanist based in New York City (USA) and Quio (Ecuador). He is Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Design Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he leads the South America Project research initiative. Correa is also co-founder of Somatic Collaborative, a research based design-practice, which focuses on a speculative approach to architecture and urbanism, and engages a wide host of material geographies and design procedures.
Ramiro Almeida is a Visiting Scholar at MIT Media Lab focusing his work at the intersection of cities + innovation + technology. He is a former Harvard University Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design. He leads a wide variety of social entrepreneurship and innovation activities to improve the quality of life in cities. Almeida is also President and Founder of QUITOLAB, the first Urban Innovation Laboratory in Latin America, in collaboration with MIT Media Lab.

The best book on Quito and its urban form

A Line in the Andes provides a in-depth analysis of Quito and its relation to topography and urban growth. The value if the book is in its understanding and visualization of Quito and also in the drawing techniques embedded in the work. This book presents the kind of rigorous urban analysis and design strategies that cities need today.

Incredibly insightful view of the city of Quito, like no other book available. Highly Recomend it!!!

The level of in depth study of the historic core and the historic background on each chapter is impressive. Particularly the drawing of the historic core is like no other available, it reveals the footprints of the main historic buildings in the core of Quito and gives a new understanding of the street and plaza relationships of the historic core. The essay on Jones Oriozola and the findings it brings to the forefront are exceptional.
I highly recommend this book, no other book will reveal the urban history and morphology of Quito as in depth as this one does.
